Hi all, I had a lumpectomy on 10th December, been for post surgery appointment today & I have to have a re excision. I’m wondering what to expect, is the recovery time less than the lumpectomy ? Thank you ️
Hi Dotty Welcome to forum and sorry to hear about what is happening for you. It is not uncommon sadly for this to happen for lots of folks, it usually means that the margins around the lump/bump that they take away are not wide enough for them to feel comfortable/confident that they have taken enough to clear completely the area affected with a reasonable margin, hence the re excision. I imagine that the recovery etc will be very much like the Lumpectomy, maybe slightly shorter, but at east with that you know what to expect
Hope thats helpful for you an please do let us know how you get on and I am sending very best wishes for you. for now. xx
Hi Dotty. This happened to me. I had lumpectomy on Dec 20th as a day case and re-excision on Jan 10th 3wks later as the margin was not deep enough on one side.
The op was pretty much the same except I didn't need the isotope injection and lymph node removed so the surgery time was quicker. He went through the same scar and actually neatened it up a bit.
Recovery was the same as before but as the surgery was quicker I didn't need the dalteparin jab (blood thinner) that I had on the first op. Hope that helps.
Hope all goes well for you.
Hello Dotty, that happened to me following a lumpectomy as they didn't get clear margins and had found dcis. Second op, which they classed as a 'shave', gave me clear margins. The second op was much easier painwise as they didn't have to go into my lymph nodes as these were clear and recovery was quicker. Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me anything about my experience.
Hi.
I have to have re excision also as the margins weren't clear first time. Its sounds like your experiences here led to clear margins the second time. My surgeon said it couldn't be guaranteed but hopefully its usually okay second time . I'm.on chemo at the.moment before the second go.
