Lumpectomy - what to expect?

I've finally come to terms (!) with the fact I have breast cancer, as there was nothing to see, and only a routine mammogram picked it up.

I am booked to see the surgeon on Wednesday to get my pathology results, and will discuss what to do next.

Reading others' experience of lumpectomy - I realise it's not plain sailing - and the "little op" I thought it might be may turn out to be a nightmare! Any tips from anyone, and what should I ask at my meeting?

Thank you for your help in advance!

  • I'm now 9 days post op after lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node removal. Doing okay, sleeping slightly better now. Some breast pain and under arm, not too bad. Get yourself a good non wired support bra to wear constantly for few weeks. Not much to ask really prior to op as note results available afterwards. I get my results next Thursday but trying not to focus on it. Just praying for clear margins and that not in lymph nodes. You/we can do this!! One step at a time x

  • Thank you Gander - I so hope you get good news at your appointment on Thursday. I'll keep my fingers crossed, and for all others in the same boat. The waiting around Is awful.

The next thing I'm worried about is the surgeon - there are a number available and I can't judge who I should ask for.  I hate the idea of pot luck - I like to have some info to base a decision as big as this on!

  • I am NHS so had no choice , however if you're private or NHS you can research specific surgeons. Mr Usman is mine and I had every faith in him. My wounds are pretty tidy, still got dissolveable stitches on top though atm. X

  • Thanks Gander - I've played about with going private - even if I have to mortgage the kids and the dog, but I'm not sure that would make any difference to the outcome - and the costs may be so astronomic that the house will have to go too! There are about 7 nhs breast surgeons in my area - but no reviews or comments about any of them My Gp doesn't know either. So a toss of the dice I think....

  • Hi Mary ..I keep trying to reply but its not working but these short ones do  Will leave it for a while and try again but apologies if you suddenly get 4 lengthy replies !!

  • I believe most surgeons do NHS and private. Surely professional pride would mean they'd want to do their best for all

  • I'd like to think so - the more I read, the more scary it is and you want someone to do a good job. I've just been reading about lymphodema - ugh!, frozen shoulder etc etc . Am getting myself into such a negative state of mind !

Hi Mary I have recently had a lumpectomy Dec 22nd..I too was scared but it was absolutely fine..Had lymphnodes removed under armpit too..I took two painkillers a day for three days then gently started moving left arm /shoulder about within a week it was back to normal just occasional twinges in breast.Scar went hard but thats just in knitting together..Back doing most things second week..Dont lift anything for a few days..Then just light things on side youve had op..The day goes so quickly and nurses and Surgeons are amazing..Good Luck

  • I've just done my Week 2 onwards exercises. Struggled initially with WK 1, got easier really quickly. Started WK 2 today, just know it gets easier, I believe if we do these religiously it will help. Already got pretty good range of movement. We CAN do this!!
