Mastectomy scar

Mastectomy (no lymph nodes removed) 3 weeks ago and had large fluid aspiration 4 days ago. My scar is a lumpy mess with a large fluid bump under my arm. Not really painful but dragging tight feeling all the time with a nasty hard nodule just on the bra line. I do have full range arm movement.

Any advice to manage scar and minimising swelling?

  • Hi, it's very early days yet & things will look & feel different in a few months. You will have follow-up appointments with your BCnurse & consultant to show them your concerns.

I had a double mastectomy, done within 3 months of each other, by different surgeons, so I experienced different scarring issues.  One was very 'lumpy'.  I was advised to wait until the wound had healed & then to gently move the scar-line skin in small circular movements & this will help break down the scar tissue. Your BCnurse or physio can check your scar & talk you through the right time to start doing it & what products to use.  MooGoo or Aveeno are good lotions to use but I was told to not use Bio-oil for a while.   I hate feeling greasy so tend to massage the scars in the shower each morning & use MooGoo only if the skin looks dry. I think they've now started doing trial packs on-line but I definitely recommend it.   4 months on from my last mastectomy & things are looking better.

The fluid bump under your arm may well disapate over time. Any concerns though ask your BC nurse to check it.  They don't like to drain them too often but you may find it swells again when you start using that arm a lot more but it should settle.  .  As for the nodule - I was  big boobed so the nodule looks more like a nipple!  I've been told if it becomes an issue they can look at surgery to reduce or liposuction but there is understandably a wait for this at the moment.    I hope this helps but please be patient - things will look very different in a few months.  x

  • Thanks, I'm notoriously impatient.
