So, having had a recurrence on my mastectomy scar 3 weeks ago I got results from my surgeon who told me it had changed from dcis to grade 3 breast cancer and told me that at the MDT they decided I need chemotherapy. We had a discussion of when it would start, I had mri scan which came back clear! Thank goodness. On Monday night I went to meet the oncologist and when I got there he thought I was there for a review of my mastectomy. He didn’t know I had recurrence or little op to remove lump. It was so distressing! There had been an admin error where no one updated him. He bluffed his way through meeting and ended up saying I prob wouldn’t get chemo and there would be a certain amount of self management ie check for lumps. Considering I have found 3 lumps in the past year, had lumpectomy, radiotherapy, mastectomy and now found another lump I am so distressed at the way it was left. My husband contacted my surgeon yesterday and huge apologies etc etc and I’m now having ct scan tomorrow and they are meeting again to discuss my case and decide what treatment. I was so happy up until now with my care but honestly feel so let down. I’m praying this is a blip and normal service will resume. Just needed to get it out!
This is quite serious. It means your case was not discussed in the MDT prior to your appointment with the oncologist, or else he would ahve known all about it. For him to bluff his way through the appointment is even worse as it is dishonest. Rather than giving you unfounded information that had not gone through the MDT sieve he should have apologised for the hospital error and given you another appointment for as first available date after their next MDT, during which your case should have come up as a priority due to their error in communicating with each other.
I do wonder though, exactly what does, "Admin error," mean in this context? Someone neglecting to update the system? A computer system malfunction? I would demand an explanation of exactly what happened and who was responsible.
I know! Thankfully I recorded the whole meeting and it doesn’t make easy listening for them! So bad on so many accounts! My surgeon discussed my case at MDT with other oncologist and that’s what they decided chemotherapy, but the oncologist I had seen previously and again on Monday night does not attend belfast MDT as he covers CraigAvon so I am at a loss as to why he is my oncologist!!! It’s just the last thing you need on this awful journey! Yes admin mistakes in that none of the MDT was uploaded to my file nor the whole pathology report. I’m thankful they seem to have got things together and moving on. I just pray they are! Thanks for replying appreciate it xx
