side effects of chemotherapy after the treatment has stopped

I have had 3 months of chemotherapy followed by surgery and radiotherapy. My herceptin injections are still on-going since September 2021. Apart from the extreme fatigue caused by both chemo and radiotherapy, I now have splitting finger nails. When my chemo stopped there appeared a definite ridge in the thumb nails and where the ridge has appeared half way up the nail bed, the nail has split. The same thing has happened to my index finger. I am trying to stop it tearing across the rest of the nail as that will leave half the nail bed exposed. I have tried applying lashings of nail varnish which has helped a little but it's still lifting and tearing. Does anyone have any tips on how to retain the nail?

  • I finished chemotherapy three weeks ago and have noticed a thumb nail beginning to lift from the base and other nails with white patches as if if beginning to lift off. I would also like any tips to keep my nails. I used all of the nail masks and creams recommended but didn't apply dark nail varnish which I read about.

  • Hi. I used loads of nail oil and hand cream during chemo but it didn’t stop the same happening to my nails. All of my finger and toenails did this.

For fingernails, I wrapped them in plasters or tape (they didn’t all do it at the same time thankfully!) until the nail was ready to come off without any tearing. There was new nail underneath by this time and they grew pretty quickly. Still using nail oil about three times a day and loads of hand cream and they’ve now recovered really well 6 months post chemo.

For toenails, I saw a podiatrist and let her sort them out. She removed loose bits without leaving any exposed nail bed and they didn’t get sore. Also use nail oil and cream but only once a day before I go to bed.

    Best wishes x
