Hi folks, just wanted to ask a couple of questions about sun protection, apologies if already covered.

I’ve finished radiotherapy and have been told I need to wear sunscreen factor 50 on my breasts and I should have asked if thats all year round or just summer. I’d appreciate any recommendations for sunscreens and if anyone just wears SPF 50 clothing and not lotion? Having just got rid of the cancer I’m weary of putting lots of chemicals on my breasts.

any thoughts would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

  • I had radiotherapy in August 2013 and 2 weeks after I went to Greece on holiday. I was told to keep the area out of the sun completely for a few months, I did apply F50 but I stayed in the shade and when went in the pool I wore a t shirt, not SPF, just a t-shirt. I would suggest these precautions are needed in the summer rather than all year round but if you’re wearing a top that exposes the area, to even a decent level of sun, I’d put screen on. Three years after my radiotherapy, I wasn’t taking extra precautions by then, my ex and I were stunned to see that on photos taken on holiday (you couldn’t see it with the naked eye) there was a distinct square cornered shape on the top of my chest showing where I’d been in the sun!! Obviously my experience is dated now so hopefully someone might be able to help with more up to date advice x

  • Hi

Do what Anna12345 said if you had the whole breast treated….. some people like me only have partial breast treatment these days….

Just be aware of scoop or v neck tops/ dresses in the sun  as your treatment comes quite high up to the neck in order to include all the breast tissue.

As Anna said your skin will always be more sensitive to sunlight and exposure can bring back the skin discolouration.

I would definitely wear a T shirt in the pool at least for the first year.
