Hi my surgeon has said he's goin to remove all the lymph nodes under my armpit an was wondering if anyone has had this done an what I'll be like afterwards as my surgeon said it will be quite painful

  • I had my lymph nodes removed I will say the pain wasn’t that bad in fact I would say it felt stiff not painful the key is gentle exercise

Did u get the cording under your armpit? And thanks im a little worried as I've had problems with the shoulder on the same side as my breast cancer

  • No I didn’t get cording but I did the arm exercises they will give you. And I have a horse so have to keep arm moving caring for him. My operation was 7 months ago and it is feeling a bit tighter but not cording I just step up the exercise

I also had a little hot water bottle for underneath arm

  • Hi I had all  lymph nodes removed, I have to say it wasn't painful just discomfort and a bit stiff but it's slowly Improved. I didn't get cording so lucky with that, 2 years on and it's a bit numb still but that's normal

  • Hi, I had full lymph nodes removal 8 weeks ago, and it wasn't as painful as expected. Discomfort to start with, the drain is uncomfortable but once that's removed and you can start the exercises it eases pretty quickly. I now have full movement in arm no different to the other arm.

  • Hi Kel12,

I had lymph node removal on Dec13 and developed a seroma , my surgeon doesn’t use drains so was advised to persevere and let it drain naturally. It did get very uncomfortable and I couldn’t put my arm down properly, also made doing the exercises more difficult.

On about the 14th day it started go down pretty quickly and within 4days had disappeared and now much easier and less painful when doing the exercises.

I did find this procedure more painful than my mastectomy, mainly  due to the seroma but everyone is different  so hopefully you will have minimal discomfort.

sending best wishes for your upcoming surgery .

Oh no but at least your on the right track now and thanks xx

  • Hi I had my lymph nodes removed after my mastectomy (we were not expecting cancer in the lymph nodes).  You do have to stretch your arm to get it working but don’t do anything until you are cleared for physio.  I still have cording and tightness but at least I can move my arm up.  All the best J x

  • Kel12,

I'm booked in on the 30th March for mastectomy of right breast and reconstruction and removal of all my lymph nodes, so glad you asked this question to be honest, wishing you all the best xx
