I was told not to shave my under arm as i had surgery to remove my lymph nodes and radiotherapy. I was given a leaflet that said to use hair removing cream but decided against that as my skin was sore after radiotherapy. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or advice.

  • Hi I think that if your underarm skin is still sore or delicate in any way that it's probably best to do nothing and let the hair grow until such time as your skin recovers. Fortunately it's winter now so you'll be covered up and then maybe by summer when your underarms will be exposed you might be able to use the cream or a razor.

I'm surprised though because I thought radiotherapy stops the hair from growing back for a while.  I only had radiotherapy to my left breast and not to my underarm but still noticed that my underarm hair growth had slowed hugely even a year post treatment.

  • I was the same as with hair growth very slow. Even now, 8 months on from rads, I barely shave my underarms as the hair has come back in much softer and lighter after chemo and now I'm working from home, I don't wear sleeveless tops any more to cope with stuffy offices!

I use an electric shaver, which doesn't take any skin off like a razor blade does. I used to epilate which is also a no-no now with the risk of lymphoedema in that arm.

  • Hello I don’t have radio so maybe my advice isn’t useful. But post mastectomy -/ lymph node I found it so uncomfortable to be hairy but I couldn’t get my arm up to shave. I found that VEET do a spray on hair remover for sensitive skin so I checked with breast care nurse who said it was on - funny how much cleaner I felt.

    good luck x
