I have been diagnosed with grade 3 breast cancer and estrogen negative. Is this the same as invasive ductal cancer grade 3 triple negative ? I am currently waiting to see the oncologist for a chemo treatment plan.

  • Hello Boo359, sorry to hear that you have been diagnosed with breast cancer, although it seems from your post that you have not been given the full details yet?

Your biopsy will identify various information relating to the type of cancer that you have.

The Grade of your cancer describes the type of cancer cells that you have, not the type of breast cancer you have. This link might be helpful as it explains the grading process:

Have you been informed that the type of cancer you have is  IDC / Triple negative?  If your cancer does not have any receptors for hormones and HER then your cancer would be considered triple negative - have you been told whether your cancer is HER positive or negative yet? This link explaining the different types of breast cancer might be helpful:

It won't be possible to say from the information provided whether your cancer is IDC / triple negative or not as that would be dependent on your pathology report details (not just being estrogen negative). Do you have a designated breast care nurse? If so it might be worth contacting them to find out your pathology report results if you haven't been given the full details yet, and you can also request a copy of the pathology report too. If you are due to see your oncologist soon they will also be able to tell you exactly what type of cancer you have. Hope this helps, and hope that your treatment goes well. Things tend to seem a bit better and less confusing once a plan is in place, plus you'll find lots of support here from others who have been in the same position.

  • Hi Boo, do you know if you are Her positive or negative? I understand triple negative (I have IDC triple negative and grade 3 and given a good prognosis) is when you are negative for oestrogen, HER and progesterone.  Good luck xx

  • Hi. All I know is I have grade 3 breast cancer. I am oestrogen negative so tablets will not work . Im more than likely getting ahead of myself asking these questions. I've had the biopsy which the consultant has told me grade 3, I got confused and thought that meant stage 3. He did try to explain but none of it mad sense. Sorry. He said they wouldn't know what stage until I had an op and that I would need chemo first to hopefully shrink it. My daughter was with me but to be honest she has tried to explain what he said but am STILL not getting it . :-(

  • Thank you. I have now got the information I need I have Grade 3 invasive: ductal Carcinoma.ERO/PRO/HER2 negative. My oncology appointment has been brought forward a week so will be seeing them on Thursday. The thought of having chemo frightens the life out of me but I just want the treatment to start !!! Does that make sense? I know everyone is different but is there an "approx" time lapse from seeing the oncologist to having the chemo ?

  • Hi @Boo359

I was also diagnosed as grade 3 triple negative.  It was approximately one and a half weeks from seeing the oncologist to my first chemo. My chemo regime was 3 x 3 weekly EC and then 12 weekly Paclitaxel. Other ladies who are also triple negative had a different chemo regime so it really is individualised.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Claire Thank you for that. AS you say everyone is different. What happens on your first visit to the oncologist ?

  • At my hospital,  my height and weight was recorded prior to seeing the oncologist.  The oncologist explained the different chemo drugs I had and went through all the side effects. When these are explained it sounds so awful but they have to give you all the potential side effects and this doesn't mean to say you will get all of them.  He also told me how long the chemo will be for.

    Take care

  • Thank you.

Did you have to wait long to start the chemo ? I.ve got a list as long as my arm with questions for them ,

  • Hi Boo

It was approx 1 1/2 weeks from my oncologist appt to my 1st chemo session. It's good that you've got a list of questions to ask

    Take care
