Hi. I had my surgery just over two weeks ago. I had a 3 to 4 cm lesion removed and two sentinel nodes. I had a mastopexy which went well. I'm waiting for my post OP histology, which is a bit of a distraction.
Having read others surgeries and treatments I consider I've had a relatively easy ride so far but I'm amazed how tired I am. I nod off at the drop of a hat during the day and then find myself awake during the night.
I'm also surprised that my breast is still quite painful, especially my areola where I had stitches. My skin is dry and itchy so I've started using bio oil which helps a bit. Travelling in the car I feel every slight bump and although my arm mobility is good, I'm not driving yet.
I know everyone is different but is it usual to feel so knackered and are there any tips for sore stitches. and getting back to a normal sleep pattern.
You are suffering g fatigue which is different from just being tired. Your body is recovering from the physical trauma, general anaesthetic and your mind over thinking. When you feel a bit washed out don't try to fight, just sit quietly or watch some easy watching TV that requires no effort. You should find quietening your over thinking helps. Pain/discomfort from surgery can go on for months as nerves cut etc. try a small pillow in the car . Itching is healing xx
Agree with Grogg in that this is fatigue, not just tiredness from an operation. Being diagnosed with BC is scary.
My breast can still be painful now and I had surgery in Feb, though it doesn't bother me as I know what it i. Mine stayed swollen for months which can cause a bit of pain when you're wearing a tight fitting supporting bra. It does get better gradually but breast tissue doesn't like getting disturbed and takes a long time to settle. Keep up the arm exercises so you help your mobility as everything heals.
I think you're supposed to wait at least 4-6 weeks before using bio oil on any wound. Maybe just something like aveeno or e45 just now but if you can stand it, probably better to go with nothing for another couple of weeks as you don't want to risk anything going inside the wound and causing an infection. I think the bio oil instructions say 4 weeks, which is what I did.
I was quite surprised at how tired I have been. Physical and mental recovery is not linear and you've had a huge shock being told you have cancer. had a bit of a wobbly a couple of months ago when I had been doing really well over the Summer and loving life again. I had chemo, lumpectomy and radiotherapy plus was put into a medical menopause and am on 5 years of hormone treatment. It all just caught up with me!
Hi, the others are right, even a general anaesthetic takes up to three weeks to totally leave your system.
your body is still in ‘recovery mode’ from both the physical and emotional trauma of an operation to remove cancer. Go with the flow and allow yourself that recovery time, maybe a nap if you feel it’s needed. But don’t forget the shoulder exercises!

Hi
You have had a much tougher time than I have and I hope you are feeling ok now.
As you say symptoms and emotions aren't linear., must admit I'd not thought of that.
Thanks for the tip on bio oil, I'll swop to e45/aveeno.and wait a couple of weeks before using it again.
I'm doing the exercises to keep mobile.
xx
Hi Moomy
Thanks for the good advice and support.
As ever I am so grateful for this forum and all the support.
I think I'm probably expecting too much from myself and having factors like effects from anaesthesia helps me understand why I'm feeling a bit rubbish.

Hi
I had my WLE and Sentinel node biopsy op on 7th December for a 8mm invasive breast tumour and got my results on 23rd December which were all good. I was doing really well physically and healed very well but did crash the day after my results and have remained fatigued since then. I think it's a combination of physical and emotional stress catching up as it's been so fast and I only had a confirmed diagnosis on 11th November.
As Grogg says fatigue is different from tiredness.. my partner lives with severe fibromyalgia and is frequently fatigued. It can make you feel nauseous spaced out and totally wiped out.
Make you you rest and give yourself time to process. I am taking things gently and resting when I need to plus exercising when I can. I'm back at work but on reduced hours which is helping. I figure I've had physical trauma through surgery emotional trauma re the diagnosis plus had to stop my HRT ( not as bad as I thought) and have now started hormorne blockers so need to be kind to myself
Take care xx
Hi.
I had my surgery the day after yours but am still waiting for my results. Oddly enough I have felt queasy on and off and hadn't realised this can be a symptom of fatigue.
I'm hoping for no more surgery as it will just addmore delay to getting to the point where I have a treatment plan.
I suspect I may need radiotherapy and definitely hormone suppression as I had a very high ER score from the pre op biopsy.
Glad to hear you are getting better. Just make sure you take it easy too. xx
Hi
I will be having radiotherapy too in the new year. I think 5 sessions but to be confirmed so we sound very similar treatment wise. I'm currently dealing with a headache from hell having started the AI and had exactly the same when I stopped HRT so know its related. It'll pass though and I guess it shows they're doing their job!. My ER score was 7/8
I hope your results are as expected. Mine were spot on with no surprises but I was so anxious before. Its a worrying time I know
It does feel better when your treatment plan is confirmed and I was given my end of treatment info at my appointment on 23rd. It all feels very quick compared to some of the experiences the ladies on her go through and my head needs to catch up I think.
Take care and sending you best wishes for your results. Xxx
Hi
I'm hoping to hear something results wise this week. If I don't hear anything by Thursday I'll contact the hospital.
Must admit I'm a bit concerned regarding clear margins as the area of concern contained a large cyst.around 4 cm. I can see that tissue has been removed, but the surgeon said there was a risk that another surgery may ne needed.
My ER score is similar to yours at 8/8 . So I'm hoping for no further surgery but likely radiotherapy and AI meds.
Let me know how you get on
All the very best xx
