Hi anyone else still awake? Menopause insomnia is driving me crazy! A little bit about myself- diagnosed in Dec 2019 all the usual treatments including double mastectomy clear for a while then March this year it has metastasised to my spine. I’m currently on zoladex and struggling with menopause symptoms at 37 years old also failed marriage after 2 years struggled with my wife for 4 years, no support through cancer - discovered why it’s been so hard with her, she has autism. Not looking forward to Christmas alone.
I wake and stay awake a lot during the night now too but I stay in bed and rest, and have to say, I don't go anywhere near a computer or phone as that would just wake me up completely!
Things that help me are
1.having a chillow so I can cool down enough to go back to sleep when I have a not flush, and a fan by my bed for when I really can't cool down
2. going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, during the week and weekends
3. Not looking at my phone for the last hour before going to bed (I cannot sleep at all if I do)
4. Using a sleepy oil or magnesium oil before going to sleep helps me get to sleep
5. using a meditation app to get to sleep helps
6. I've taken 5-htp for years which is supposed to help with sleep but also help with mood. Don't try anything without asking your oncologist first though.
7. When I've had a bad spell of sleepless nights, I have sleeping tablet from the Dr - I only take about 1 a month but it just helps reset my sleep pattern as you can get into a cycle of thinking you're not going to sleep, which then happens because you think it will
Really sorry to read about marriage issues. The meditation app is probably a good idea to try and stop your thoughts running away with you before sleeping.
We have a thread for that . Started many years ago by LondonLass and still going strong. Just jump to last post, hit reply and say hello. It's just a thread to chat about life, find some company when the night gremlins hit etc.
Hi Hailey
some great advice from Beatthebreast there. When I started cancer treatment and couldn’t sleep I used to read or turn on my ipad. This kept me awake more, and I was exhausted in the morning.
Then I invested in some cheap wireless earbuds and that has made a huge difference. I got a set which still work when you wear only one bud, so I can comfortably lie on my side. I pop them in, close my eyes and listen to podcasts or audio books. There are loads of free podcasts and apps with relaxation exercises, sleepy bedtime stories to help you drop off, or relaxing music. I also listen to audio books that I’ve already read and enjoyed so that if I doze off and miss a bit it doesn’t matter. Usually I do go to sleep even if sometimes it takes a while. Even if I don’t, lying there with my eyes closed leaves me feeling much better and more rested the next day.
Best of luck and hope you find a solution soon x
