Can someone help me please. As I said in a previous post I had a mastectomy two weeks ago tomorrow.  I am still in a bit of pain. Some days worse than others.  I also my lymph nodes removed under my right arm.  How long does the pain last I suppose it is the nerves knitting together.  Is this normal?

  • Hello Roders, sorry to hear you are suffering from pain. You have had major surgery so it will take some time for everything to heal properly but difficult to say how long it will last for as this will vary from person to person. When I had a lumpectomy and some lymph nodes removed I was still getting some pain and discomfort for at least a month or so after the op, and a mastectomy is a bigger procedure. Did you get given some pain relief after the surgery? If you need something stronger then please contact your nurse/medical team as from experience they will be happy to help you.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I have been taking Paracetamol and Morphine when I need it.  I have to go back to see the consultant next week I will see what he says.

  • hi I had all my lymph nodes removed 2 days ago! it's not a fun thing is it and  I'm in some pain too. taking it easy as I can but not letting everything stiffen up either. shoulder and back of arm still numb. Good luck getting relief xx

  • I had fentanyl when I was still under anaesthetic and then morphine and diclofenac (an NSAID) for 5 days, then co-codemol and ibuprofen for another week, and finally paracetamol and topical Volterol gel. Surgery was almost 5 weeks ago. So my conclusion is we’re all different but it isn’t uncommon to have quite high pain levels for some weeks. Yeah, I know some have minimal pain but they’re not us

  • I had a mastectomy  in June and axillary  node clearance in August   I had morphine twice in hospital.  And also paracetamol.   After 4 days in hospital each time I needed paracetamol on and off for a few days.  I found Voltarol was useful for the bruising after the surgery.  Hope that helps.

  • Thank you for the info I will try the Voltarol when my dressing has been removed.  I have had a second lot dressing on since I had my drain out. I am due to go to hospital a week today.
