How long did your constipation last after final chemo?

I had my chemo ended early (long story). Peripheral neuropathy was just beginning in tips of fingers and toes plus I had extremely bad case of “paclitaxel hands”

these things are going in right direction 18 days after last chemo. But no sign I can reduce laxatives at all - in fact I almost wonder if I need more. 2 x movicol AM and Pm and a senna tablet daily. I was really hoping this particular SE might improve soonish. I have oncology tel appt on 13th so will ask, but of course would love to hear I’m in the range of normal on this front (and when it might improve)

Constipation started with AC immediately and I had hoped for diarrhoea on paclitaxel but it just got worse. I have never in 54 years had constipation so I have no history of it

 thank you

  • Bad constipation lasted about 4 or 5 days for me. I would maybe consider probiotics? I drank kefir after the first week of chemo (was a bit worried before that as you shouldn't really drink live cultures during chemo!). I think it really helped my system get back to normal. Chemo kills off all the good bacteria in your digestive system as I understand it. So although those first few days following chemo are more likely to be because of the anti-sickness meds, i you are continuing to have issues, your system may be a bit out of whack,

  • I suffered with this and it has taken me months to get good bowel regime. At my worst I was taking 4 laxido and 2 dulcolax daily and I was in agony with cramps from dulcolax. I now take 2 senna every second night and 2 laxido per day ( 1 in morning then 1 at night) back to normal but I will stay on this untill treatment finished

  • Thank you, I was literally just looking at a jar of live sauerkraut wondering when I could get back onto stuff like that as well as probiotics. I’ve been on antibiotics since late July as recommended to the oncologist by my lung consultant in order to protect my lungs (which has worked out, hurrah) but they will also be playing havoc with my gut. Normally I live on probiotics and long to go back to my usual diet.

  • Thank you. I think I will try and gradually reduce from this evening. I’ve had nausea today and occasional diarrhoea so it might be a sign I’m making some inroads with my very high veg high fibre diet that I decided I had to move onto. Cake is more fun but I’ve done a lot of that to get me through 2021 so  far

    best wishes
