Can it possibly be growing back this fast?

Hi everyone

head’s in a complete tailspin here. Diagnosed with TNBC in April with 70mm tumour and in 1 lymph node. Had 4 EC then 12 pax with 3 doses of carbo added in. Midway MRI after EC showed it was no longer in lymph and some shrinkage, think to about 52mm. Then my last MRI before chemo finished showed still not seen in lymph but scattered  foci. Docs didn’t confirm a size at this point. BCN explained it to me like a footprint in the sand originally filled with cancer, now the footprint is still there but with speckles of cancer.
My fear now is that it’s growing again as I can feel it getting firmer behind my nipple. I’ve got my surgery this Friday coming so it’s all getting cut out in my single mx but can it honestly grow so fast after chemo? I’m terrified that it will have spread and all that chemo would have been for nothing. My head has completely gone and all rational thoughts have escaped me.

  • Hi  I don't know whether it can grow back that fast but I think your doctors must have had a fair idea of how quickly it would grow and they would have planned the surgery accordingly.  Either way it'll all be out soon so try not to worry.  Even in the unlikely event that you need chemo again the chemo shrunk it once so it would be able to shrink it again.

I'm sure your doctors know what they are doing and that come tomorrow you will be cancer free Smile.

Wishing you all the best with surgery tomorrow.

  • Remember it was growing all that time without you knowing you had it, so now you have had chemo and it has shrunk, you are in a much better position.

I had chemo first and was told optimum time for surgery was 4-6 weeks after last chemo. But that doesn't mean it's going to grow back quickly if you don't meet that timeline. It seems very unlikely that cancer would grow back fast after chemo. You are probably still feeling awful from chemo, and your cells are able to grow back. The cancer cells are killed off so will be feeling worse than you.

Your MDT really will know what they're doing and you have surgery today so it will all be out.

Good luck with the surgery today.

  • Hi

This is so stressful, I had an ultrasound half way through that showed that my tumours weren't shrinking. I was devastated as my boob felt so different and my nipple, which had been slightly inverted had came back out. My oncologist advised that we continue as he was looking at everything holistically and not just the scan in isolation. I had a difficult time to pull my big girl pants back up and get my positive vibes back on, but I did! I used simple meditation before bedtime to fall asleep and a little visualisation to help my mind (use an app called Aura), helped me a lot. At times I had convinced myself it was bigger, was attached to my chest wall… the mind does crazy things!I also messaged my friends on the forum and received replies to the post stating that others had similar results but then had a positive outcome. Anyway fast forward 3 months and my MRI came back clear at beginning of Nov but was scared to believe it until the tissues had been checked as I could still feel lumps! Post mastectomy and results  show full pathological clearance, no cancer! I will now undergo radiotherapy and continue targeted therapy into 2022 (my cancer was HER2+, stage 3). Sending you big hugs and much love as it’s so stressful and you have already come so far and remember you are seeing positive results

Good luck today, thinking if you xx
