Armpit issues - anyone else?

A lot of my story is in my profile but for ease, I had lumpectomy mid June and had 15 sessions of radiotherapy late Aug/Sept finishing 16 Sept. My 2 scars are on left side of breast one above the other and the top one is on the bra line. I am struggling with fluid (which can't be drained) and puffy armpit and round back of shoulder blade for about a month now, with some pooling around bottom of breast. some days better than others. I have been seen by physio who just examined me and gave me some more exercises and a compression sleeve which I wear on alternate days. As its winter, I'm not sweating a lot but does anyone else have issues with armpit. Its like I don't sweat properly. My armpit can feel tacky and the skin sticks to itself. I wear deodorant (a natural one) in the day. Its often tingly, sometimes like pins and needs, other times just wearing a bra makes it ache. I'm well endowed for my frame (a 34FF or 36E depending on bra and only 5ft) so going without a bra isn't an option. My BCN is not helpful and only works part time so not worth a call. As you lovely ladies have a wide range of experience, I thought I would ask the question here - so does anyone else have some of these issues? Is this normal?

I was told it can take 6 months after rads to get breast feeling more normal but the cording can last up to 2 years. I'm trying to move on but its hard as achy and tired and sleep still a bit crap (still doing the 4/4.30am wake). I'm just feeling a bit tired of it all and want to feel better (ok moan over). Keep going ... one day at a time x

  • Hi Tired minion,

I feel exactly the same as you I had my op in August and had radiotherapy in November, mine is on my right side , doesn’t help I’m right handed my boob and arm pit aches all the time my arm feels like it constantly has an elastic band round it , I also don’t sleep have los of appetite and feel sick all the time I’m taking Letrozole so blaming them for some of it ,hope it helps to know your not alone and start feeling better soon xxx

  • Thanks  for the reply. Glad to hear I'm not the only one. I feel like I am moaning when I know there are others who have gone through so much but these niggling symptoms are frustratingly annoying. I think the drugs have a lot to answer for too. I'm on tamoxifen and it gets blamed for all sorts. I probably need to be more patient. Keep going too xx

  • Hi. I’m the same. Right mastectomy and auxiliary clearance. Op in June and radiotherapy finished early Sept. Boob scar is tight. Under arm feels like it’s hard and numb. I have some swelling above shoulder blade and by armpit on front. Not sure if fluid or excess skin. Some days I have pain by my elbow and my armpit feels tight. I swim a lot thinking it would help. I now find my shoulder movement wasn’t as good as it was post op. I recently had a CT scan for something else and they mentioned post op changes in my armpit. I would have thought changes go without saying after a full clearance. However I’m having an ultrasound january to see what’s going on. Wether this means physio for movement or lymphodema I’m not sure. Glad I’m being checked though.
im fed up like you. Fed up of hospital letters and appointments. My sleep is rubbish and I’m on tamoxifen and I too have a tacky armpit Weary

    however we cannnnnnnn do this.
    big hug x

  • Thanks for the reply. It sounds awful and unkind to others but I am glad not to be on my own with this one. There's no one I can really ask and it seems petty questions but glad I'm not the only one. Yes we can do this but it doesn't stop us feeling fed up with the constant niggles and pain. Some days it feels like a big hand is grabbing my armpit. I don't go back to see physio until mid Jan and she is just monitoring swelling and does a quick feel. I'm glad to not have any other or more appointments but on the other hand the post treatment care is non existent - whether that be cos of covid or that there just isn't any I don't know. I'm so glad everyone on this site is friendly and can help when they can. I'm not going to let this get the better of me but some days are just hard going. Now I have a sore other arm as had my covid booster this morning but taking everything just to stay healthy. I've had some acupuncture recently - 5 sessions. my sleep is getting better. Worth seeing if your hospital does anything like that? I had to pay for mine and lucky that I can but health plan with work meant that I've had 3 of the sessions refunded to me. keep going too. xx

  • That’s interesting re acupuncture. I agree post op care goes out the window when treatment finished but we constantly live with ‘should it be like that, aches pains etc. I constant worry about lymphodema and think that had I not had the ct scan recently I would not know that there are these changes!! She said not to worry it’s not cancer. I’m assuming it’s cording or shoulder movement issues or fluid. I’ll let you know how I get on. I think everyone should have their armpit checked after this invasive surgery every few months

  • Yes I have cording and rang physio about 2-3 weeks after finishing rads as my armpit felt very fluidy and puffy but just wanted some more exercises to help. she told me to come in. she told me far more about what to expect and timescales than anyone else. I don't think it helped I changed hospitals. one hospital for surgery and then another for rads as they didn't do it. post care from both has been non existent. I did have a follow up call from oncologist but had never met her anyway and I know she recommended the BCN to call me re follow up but heard nothing. get more info and handy tips from this group. I was skeptical about acupuncture as not had it before but did post a thread about it and others have had it with some good success stories so thought I would give it a go. We all jsut want reassurance that this is how its supposed to be but don't get it! yes do let me know how you get on x
