Hi. I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer on Aug this year and have had a lumpectomy and radiotherapy.  I am now on monthly injections to stop my ovaries producing oestrogen, my cancer was hormone receptive, but I’m suffering terrible night sweats as I’ve gone into menopause.

They are waking me up every 2 hours and I’m so tired during the day and it’s making me feel down.

I’m taking evening primrose but it’s not working at the moment.  Can anyone suggest anything else?

Thank you & best wishes. X

  • I found mine ease after a couple of months but I'm on tamoxifen. I've also been having some acupuncture which I feel is helping. I do recall people talking about medication to help but I can't remember what. Sorry. Have you tried typing in the search function to see if there are other threads? x

  • I am on zoladex for ovary suppression which was made even more intense as I started it during chemo, over a year ago. My hot flushes were intense and every 20 mins day and night. They did start to get better after I stopped chemo and are now down to every 30 mins to 3 hours.

    Things that have helped:

1, a chillow - it is a cool gel pillow that you can use when you wake up, but once you're cool, you'll need to put it back on the floor so it can cool down again for next time otherwise it stays warm!

    2. a fan

    3. sage tablets (my BCN recommended them) - help a bit

    4. nettle tea - I have recently started drinking this again. Definitely helped reduce the anxiety and feeling of claustrophobia that I was getting with a flush. I read that it is just as good as acupuncture (which I haven't tried)

Alcohol makes mine worse, as does stress.

I try not to worry about being woken up by them. I often woke in the night anyway and it is better to stay relaxed about it and then you can get back to sleep.

I was finding it hard to get to sleep and stay asleep for a while and I now often use a meditation app to get to sleep. It then helps when you wake up as you remember to breath and get back to sleep quicker.

Other than that, I just have to throw the covers off. Good at the moment as the bedroom is cold!

I would say that of al the above, the nettle tea has helped the most as I just feel hot now, and don't have the anxiety that would come with mine, which made it difficult to settle again.

They are miserable, I'm hoping they will continue to fade.

There are things the doctor can give you. I tried one of them but it just made me feel numb everywhere and mood was affected, and so wasn't worth it, especially as it didn't make much difference.

  • I have had acupuncture for hot flushes …. Referred by my oncologist and carried out at the hospital. I have been taught to needle my feet and legs as maintenance and will have a top up session in January.

it’s been amazing and I haven’t had a night sweat for about 6 weeks now and I used to have to get up to change my pjs.

    it’s worth asking if it’s available to you…. .

I had my one at the Royal Marsden x

  • That sounds fantastic, I'm going to ask my oncologist about acupuncture!

  • It’s been a game changer for me….. 6 sessions …. 28 needles a time and on the 6th session I was taught to needle myself and sent home with needles and instructions.

I honestly didn’t feel anything when they put the needle in and am happy to do it to myself.

    Good luck x
