Covid Caution

Hi everyone,

I’m new on here but was diagnosed on Monday with breast cancer, am ER+ and waiting for an MRI scan as the mammogram was inconclusive. They plan to do a lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy.
I have a potential surgery date of 5th January but this may move, depending on the MRI,  and would really appreciate your advice on how careful I should be with socialising etc.

I am married and have three children who all lead busy lives. I don’t think Covid is a problem in itself (as in I am at no greater risk from covid because of the cancer), but don’t want to take unnecessary risks and delay the MRI scan or surgery. Are others being really careful during this waiting period?

Thank you x

  • Hi I had to have a PCR 3 days before surgery could go ahead. MRI scan scan was done with a non metal containing face mask - no nose bit.

  • Hi, and welcome to the group . Sorry you find yourself here but everyone is wonderful and it helps so much sharing experiences.

I’m booked in for auxiliary clearance on 13th of this month and although I don’t have children at home I do try to be careful regarding hand hygiene /hand gel and wearing a mask as like you don’t want to delay surgery due to catching covid/flu ect. It is difficult when you have children as you want their lives to stay as normal as possible, so there is always going to be slightly more risk when there is more people in your household coming and going.

Also I try and limit people visiting me a couple of weeks before surgery/scans just to limit the risk of infection as much as possible.

I,m sure there will be other ladies on here with children at home who can share advice as to how they managed regarding this . Best wishes for your scan and surgery.

Hi Missi k, hope your op goes OK.  I had axillary clearance last week. Did you know about Jen's Friends? They make heart shaped little cushions which fit under your arm giving support. They are free  you only pay for postage. Absolutely wonderful.  I have two, one on the bed and one in the lounge.  Here if you need a chat. X

  • Yes I’m very careful because just like you I don’t want any delays, I have a 12 year old. I don’t have her friends (or many of mine tbh) in the house atm and we both make efforts not to go to small, enclosed, unventilated places. It has meant we don’t go to restaurants/cinema/theatre atm but we would just rather get this over and done with. Obviously we wear masks everywhere indoors too. We avoid anyone ill with anything! But I have also been having chemo and now am going to have surgery. Best of luck to you x

  • Thankyou, I didn’t know about Jens friends, I think this is wonderful.

when I had my double mastectomy I was given two heart shaped pillows to to take home and they really helped. I still have them so will definitely use one after my auxiliary clearance .

Hope you are recovering well now .
