I have had a seroma drained for the third time yesterday. The nurse who did it told me they are only allowed to drain four time. It seemed strange and I am going to check it with my own team, but I wonder if anyone else has heard of such a restriction.
The colour of the drained fluid bothers me a little. I have emailed my nurse, but now I wonder -- what colour did you observe when they drained yours? Was there a change in colour over time?
Hi I assume they made need to do some sort of surgical repair if the seroma doesn't diminish? Seroma fluid often starts out pinkish red, then orange and finally yellow, as the amount of blood it's mixed with reduces over time. Red seroma fluid which doesn't go away could be a nicked blood vessel, that's what they told me.
My drain was yellow and sometimes pinky red. Sometimes lumps too (ick). But didn’t have seroma that’s just through the drain for three weeks.
good luck
That's exactly the issue -- it was last drained yesterday, which was 21 days past surgery, and it looked like red wine. I am not all that keen on the idea of them going back in there, but I am equally not thrilled with the idea of a leak. I am hoping to hear back from my nurse in the morning.
Try not to worry - I'm sure they'll do whats necessary to fix the problem if it doesn't fix itself. I'm in a similar position - there is something wrong with my implant, maybe seroma, and I don't know what they'll do to fix it, but they've never given me reason to doubt their medical expertise. And I'm sure we're not the first patients to have these issues.
Thanks, I hope so too. My nurse says the colour is ok for now as long as it does not appear bright red, which it doesn't.
Regarding how many times they are allowed to drain, I am now wondering if the nurse meant that the nurses themselves are only allowed, in that hospital, to drain four times in a row before referring back to the surgeon, or some such. I can only go by what she actually said so this is just speculation. If it becomes necessary, I will query it.
