Invasive ductal carcinoma, grade 2. Radioactive seed

I was confirmed as having invasive ductal carcinoma on 12th Nov. Lumpectomy is booked for 30th Nov.

I thought  I could spend this week getting shopping, cleaning the house etc etc ready for next week. But, out of the blue, I got a letter asking me to go for a radioactive seed inserting tomorrow.

Has anyone else had a radioactive seed implanted? Is it painful? Does it have to be a week before surgery?

I’m feeling all over the place emotionally,  but was kind of OK until this letter because I felt I was planning things and getting what I needed on the house in advance, so had some kind of focus.

  • Hello. Yes I had a magseed. Its like a radioactive piece of rice. Its done with ultrasound to get it in the right place. You should get a local before hand to numb area. Its like a biopsy needle. For me, it stung a bit and I did bruise but I was still bruised from biopsy a few weeks before. Its to help the surgeon pinpoint your lump. It gets removed with lump in surgery so not in for long. Yes usually done a week before so any bruising can go down. They told me my preop was an hour and a half. 3 hours later after magseed, mammogram to check it was in right place, 20 questions, ecg and a blood test I made it home. You'll also probably have to have a covid test 3 days before then isolate at home to minimise germs. Depends what your hospital current rules are. Good luck x

  • No the seed implant isn’t painful- if it is, ask for more local anaesthetic because it shouldn’t hurt.

  • Hi, it’s a lot to take in isn’t it? I found it just to be as uncomfortable as the biopsy was - they will then mammogram again to make sure it is in the correct place.  I had a telephone pre-op but didn’t realise I would need to visit the hospital for bloods and a heart check - I was able to arrange for those appointments and the Covid test on the same day however at two different hospitals.  Your breast care nurse should be able to help confirm all of the appointments you need in the lead up to your surgery then hopefully you can help you feel organised before your surgery.
