Hi all.

I'm having an axiliary clearance on Friday. Just recovered from double theraputic mammoplasty.  I've been told by Macmillan nurse to expect a lot of pain, numbness and fluid buildup.

I've been pretty upbeat but feel as if I'm just lunging from one treatment to another. Am now dreading the effects of this op. Has anyone got any tips for trying to reduce the fluid build up?

  • Hi there.  Doing the exercises certainly help but I think fluid build up just happens.  I had a seroma and an infection but that's not the case for everyone.   All sorted now  apart from a little swelling but all is fine now.

  • Judging from my surgery, fluid build up is made worse if you over do it. So do get plenty of rest. Otherwise it is a normal part of healing which is a reason they use things like drains.

  • Hi. I’m six months on almost and my tips are. Do the exercises religiously but don’t be tempted to do lots more. The walking up the wall exercise will get easier. Cording in your armpit can be massaged quite firmly when u are healed. I did it in the shower. The numbness does come back but not all of it. I’m numb under my arm. You may get pain going down your arm and some sharp pains but my only issue is a tennis elbow type pain. Don’t carry shopping or handbags on the shoulder or arm and use your good arm. The fluid from your armpit will eventually just stop. I had mine drained 5 times with a needle. It didn’t hurt.
It’s not too bad I am back to doing most things apart from playing tennis. That will have to wait as I’m right handed and it’s my right arm.
you will be in good hands it’s just another hurdle to get over. A V cushion to rest my arm on was a great help too.
    best wishes xx

Ps. I didn’t find it painful and didn’t take anything either

Thank you. I'm certainly going to do my exercises for sure. Good to hear people getting over it OK even if it takes a while.

Thank you. I guess there is a fine line between doing enough exercise but not too much. I've got the jigsaws ready!!  My surgeon doesn't use drains, I think they all have their own preferences.

Thank you. I have got a little heart cushion from Jens friends, also a v cushion at the ready.  Praying I don't get lympodema.  I have complete faith in the breast care team which helps.  Sounds like you're healing well and hope you get back to the tennis soon. I'm hoping to be walking my dogs again before long.
