Good morning everyone,
I found a lump on my left breast while in the shower and thought I'd better get it checked out. The GP said she was 97% sure it wasn't anything to worry about but because I'd raised it and she could feel it, she referred me.
So off I went on Saturday, quietly confident, to the breast clinic. I'd had an ultrasound about 10 yrs ago so kind of knew how it went. After the initial examination I was sent for a mammogram and ultrasound. The mammogram didn't show anything (I'm 36) so went ahead with the ultrasound. It was here that they decided to do a core biopsy and mark the mass. I went back to the waiting room and at this point I knew things weren't looking great.
I eventually got called back in and there was a Breast specialist nurse in the room, I knew instantly something wasn't right. The consultant didn't say anything, apart from you will be called back for your test results. At this point the nurse said we are treating it as suspicious. I was overwhelmed and confused at this point. I asked if they could give me any indication and the nurse said it is suspicious that's all they can say. She could see I was confused and took me to another room. I asked for more information and she stated it was graded as 4 on the ultrasound, hence suspicious. She then proceeded to say the doctor who oversees treatment is lovely, well done for coming in and make sure I have someone with me for the meeting. I'm a realist so did say if they think it probably is cancer I'd rather a heads up, however she just kept saying suspicious.
I just kept thinking about my little 11month old and yes...my thoughts went to that place quite quickly before I told myself to slow down!
I suppose what I would like to know is if anyone else has received a grade 4 via biopsy? And your story? Does grade 4 biopsy give me some hope?
Sending positive vibes everyone's way.
The waiting is the worst part, though I was told that I likely had cancer by the surgeon at that very first breast clinic I went to. They didn't tell me what they had graded it on the ultrasound - and like you, nothing showed on my mammogram. I'm mid-40s.
My surgeon said because of my family history of BC, it was likely I had it. I didn't think they'd say that unless they were pretty sure so assumed I had it from then on.
However, the only way they can tell it is cancer is by biopsy and they will also be able to tell you the type and what grade it is (how aggressive it is - completely different from ultrasound grading).
A quick internet search and I saw that grade 4 ultrasound is suspicious and they want to take a biopsy. Grade 3 seems to be monitoring.
Your story is unique to you but we have all been in this waiting position. While it is good to hear other peoples experiences, they are not you and the only thing you can really do is wait for those results. And remember, most people on here have been diagnosed with cancer, people who have biopsies and are told it is not cancer don't tend to come on forums.
The waiting is awful. Do you have a date when you will get your results? I was lucky and knew exactly when I'd get mine.
Obviously none of us can preempt your results but suspicious means just that, a friend of mine has just had this happen to her, she had 2 biopsies and her results have come back last week no further action so as hard as it is try to stay calm and see what happens. Good luck xx
Thank you for your rational response and appreciate your time.
They will have the meeting on Thursday and I'll be called back Tues/Weds next week. I will keep myself busy and carry on as normal.
Thank you so much again.
How are you doing?
Sorry you are in the difficult position of waiting on biopsy results. I was diagnosed with DCIS in late September and I know the waiting and wondering is an awful time.. as someone just mentioned they cannot be certain of what it is until they get the lab results .. when I asked after the biopsy whether they thought it was cancer the radiologist said 50:50 so of course I thought that it was for sure and my mind was thinking all sorts of things and I couldn’t resist Dr Google which as a mistake as every situation is different and there s a lot of misinformation out there. The only thing I can say to you is as you know, keep yourself as busy as you can and the days will go by. If you can try to do something nice ( I went to the theatre twice with cheap last minute tickets when I was waiting and it helped to distract me!) Good Luck and fingers crossed for you that it’s good news..
