Hi. Had lumpectomy and lymph node removal on Tuesday afternoon and came home late on Wednesday.  It’s Friday now and I’m still absolutely exhausted and really nauseous. All I want to do is sleep. Can manage my exercises and both wounds are tender which is expected. Not sure how I’m supposed to feel. Have left a message for my breast care nurse but it’s Friday and not sure if she will get that message until Monday.  Is this unusual?

  • Not really. I was shocked how I reacted. The anaesthetic can take 3 weeks to leave your system. Breast tissue is glandular tissue so any disturbance will cause a lot of pain and inflammation in your system. Painkillers help but can also add to your body’s imbalances. I was told to expect healing to take at least six weeks with the second week possibly rougher than the first, which was the case. Your body needs rest, sleep, fluids and food to recover. I nibbled plain oatcakes as that seemed to keep my blood sugar up and settle my stomach. Lumpectomy despite the name is not a small deal. However if you have a temperature, feel red and hot around the wound site, or puss, or just generally very unwell contact your GP. I’m just writing this off the instructions I got - I’m not medical myself!. I hope you feel much better soon

  • It's been 3 days.  Be kind to yourself.  I had surgery on a Monday, felt invincible Tuesday, in state of collapse by Wednesday.  Felt delicate mentally and tired for a couple of weeks .  Broke myself in to going out by going to supermarket at 9pm so no danger if anyone bumping into me and knocking my breast.  Everyone reacts to differently to anaesthetic.  My hubby incoherent after quick surgery to wire his thumb in place.  Talking rubbish for couple of hours and exhausted.  However after a long bowel surgery he's sitting up joking in recovery, was feeling so good was tidying own bed in ICU but then 4 days later mood hit rock bottom and he was exhausted.

  • As the others have said it’s really early days and you sound much how I was after my lumpectomy, your body has been through a huge trauma, the anaesthetic, etc. Just take it really easy, your body is telling you to rest, listen to it and don’t expect too much of yourself. I think it sounds totally normal, cut yourself a little slack, big (gentle) hugs x

Thanks. Will stop being hard on myself now and give into the exhaustion. Just managed to eat some dinner without gagging so I suppose it’s one day at a time.  Xx

  • Thing is when you first come home you have the effects of the general helping you out pain wise a little and then you seem to have this dip as you’re experiencing. Take it easy xx
