Can I urge other posters, when discussing chemo not to put things like:
I think you should keep your comments about your experience, such as I personally didn’t find it too hard, I tolerated it very well, etc.
When you are really struggling with chemo, have been hospitalised with chemo, have had to have your chemo reduced because you’re not tolerating it, have been in bed for a week, etc. it can be really upsetting to have your experiences denied. For some people chemo IS as bad as its made out to be so you could be making those people feel like somehow they’ve failed to be ‘strong enough’, but also you could be leading the person you are replying to into a false sense of security.
I do appreciate these comments are meant to reassure but they are not wholly accurate. Just my thoughts….
When people are writing positive things they are not dismissing your experiences in this group they recognise everyone’s journeys are different and no less traumatic. I have been hospitalised during chemo but I chose to be positive as it helps me personally to keep going. I have done this for a year so it is important. We have freedom of speech in this country map if we choose to try to help someone by being positive we are allowed on the same token you are allowed to voice your hard traumatic journey
By asking people to discuss their own experience rather than use blanket phrases I’m not limiting anyone’s free speech, I’m encouraging them to share their own experiences therefore encouraging their free speech. I’m incredibly positive and encourage positivity throughout my posts but I don’t feel it’s right to mislead or be inaccurate, people come here for reassurance yes but also for real experiences so they can make decisions and plan and to feel a shared experience, for good or bad.
