I’m up again in the night so may be losing perspective. My pain seems to be getting worse - right mastectomy with lymph biopsy two weeks on. Gone back on to codeine etc and Drain due to come out tomorrow. But it’s the “cleavage end” of the scar that gets these really shooting sharp pains when I move - feels like it’s ripping. So I end up in situations at night where I slide down the pillows at a bad angle and can’t get myself back up because I can’t push on right arm but when I use left it makes this shooting pain. I’ve been caught stuck on the loo for ages, and several times unable to get out of bed.
tonight went up after everyone else and have just been crying on the side of the bed for two hours. Eventually got myself down to the sofa. I just can’t lie down or swing my feet up as the pain feels too sharp and also feels like it’s doing damage.
I do know the answer is to call the BC nurses tomorrow which I’ll do. But I thought putting it in here might get it out. I need to take back over sorting things out at home - my sister has been incredible but I can’t let her stay a fourth week. But I feel frightened when this happens.
The aching pain is fine that’s just pain. It’s the one that feels like I can’t move that makes me feel so helpless
Sorry to hear you are having such problems post Mastectomy. Hopefully when your drain comes out later that will make you more comfortable but I would certainly speak to your BC nurse as you do sound to be having additional issues. I had some tightness in my scar area and developed a seroma following removal of my drain so keep an eye on that.
Hooe they can sort it for you as I don't think you should be in that much pain and discomfort.
let us know how you get on
Thank you. District nurse was great. I’m going to get a bar for side of the bed and a thing to sleep sitting up so I can rest. Everything feels worse without sleep. The drain will be another few days but that’s not my main issue. Appreciate the answer in a difficult night. It’s when you’re on your own that it feels overwhelming.
I too am recovering from a mastecotmy at the moment, and while my drain was in I was having shooting pains that I would describe as you are describing yours. Once the drain was removed things improved a lot, so I really hope that the effect will be the same for you once your own drain is out.
Have you been told when you may be seeing the surgeon for a follow up?
Thank you! I have a consultants appointment next Wednesday. Only the district nurses have checked the wound. I think drain might come out at the weekend. It’s close to the amount that they said I needed to get down to. So it will have been in for 17/18 days.
district nurse got me a back board and bed handles to help me get myself in and around in bed x
Well, to me you are a hero. My own recovery is nothing compared to what you are going through, and I still found myself at the end of tolerance at times. I would be interested in what your consultant has to say when they see you, if you are willing to share, and I am thankful that a district nurse is keeping an eye on you in the meantime.
