3rd primary covid vaccination

I have been sent a text from Guys hospital saying I was eligible for the 3rd primary vaccination, separate to the booster. I have been having a lot of trouble finding information about it. I was diagnosed in January,  went on Letrozole straight away,  had a lumpectomy in May and finished 5 doses of radiotherapy in June. I feel I am not ill enough for this extra dose and would like to know what others are doing.  I had grade 2 invasive ductal cancer with high grade dcis ductal,  ER negative and one node removed.

  • Hi

I will be having a third dose but this be will post my chemo finishing and has been strongly advised by both my oncologist and surgeon. I don’t know when your second dose was and whether radiotherapy will impact the effectiveness of the vaccine. I would be inclined to request an antigen test and also talk to your Dr and breast cancer care team on it. My view is if they are recommending it to you they must have a good reason for this and it may just be “belt & braces” but that’s no bad thing.

Take care and please do let us all know how you get on as I am sure this topic is interesting for many on the forum Blush

  • Ive been written to re the 3rd dose too but am having the devils own job getting it!! The system in Bucks just doesn’t seem set up properly x I agree I will take it definitely, we’re being offered it for a reason xx

  • Hello 7169. The 3rd primary coivid vaccine is being offered to those who had a weakened immune system at the time they had their first 2 covid vaccines, to ensure that they have sufficient protection from covid. It's essentially a 'top up' for when your immunity - and therefore your covid vaccine protection - was weakened due to you having radiotherapy, so it doesn't matter how well you are feeling at the moment. Those having a 3rd primary dose will also be offered a booster at a later date. You may have already seen it but I've posted a link to the NHS website below which explains the reason for having a 3rd primary dose.

I had both of my covid vaccines before starting chemo so I'm not eligible for a 3rd primary dose but I am eligible for a booster and had this last week. I checked with my oncologist if it was ok to have this, and the flu jab, whilst having chemo and he strongly recommended that I had them both.

  • Hi  I had my third primary last week . I queried terminology of letter from local HA saying booster and NHS letter saying third primary

I did post the reply possibly on Awake but basically the dose of vaccine is the same .so last week hubs and I had same dose but his was a booster mine was called third primary because of being classed as CEVunerable and will be called for booster in six months . Some areas don’t appear to be very well organised for it .I was lucky I was identified immediately on giving name and third primary recorded so I will get booster call .

    good luck

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

  • Hello LalaLou, thanks for your reply. I went on your link and read the reasons for the 3rd vaccination. I had my first 2 injections in January and April and didn't have my radiotherapy until June so I am really thinking that I would not be eligible . I am quite confused.

  • Hello Rumple01, Thank you for your reply. I had my 2nd dose late April and my radiotherapy in June so I would think I am not eligible even though I have had the text. Where do I request an antigen test from, is that the GP? I suppose it can't hurt having an extra dose.
