Hello lovely people,

It’s been a couple of weeks since my lumpectomy and I’ve had the news that the margins and lymph nodes were clear. Great news I know, and I was delighted when I heard but that feeling was short lived. Since then an exhaustion has taken over me, I just feel so low, tired and bruised and can’t snap myself out of it.

The paper work I was sent home with said the pain would go after three days but two weeks on it still sore and I get random stabbing pins across my whole breast. I had a ultrasound last week and they found a seroma, they drained it but now I feel as if it may be back and I’m worried that this will delay my next course of treatment.

Can anyone tell me if it’s normal to feel pain still after two weeks Please. It would be good to know if this is normal or something I should get checked out again.

Thanks! X

  • Hello. I think your paperwork was wrong to tell you that. I had my surgery mid June and it took about 2 months for the pain to ease. Your body and breast have been through a lot and it doesn't like being disturbed. My advise is to take regular painkillers and get plenty of rest. everyone is different and heals at a different pace but it will take a few weeks to settle down. Obviously if you are in pain that doesn't feel right then speak to Breast Care nurse for advice. I've also had radiotherapy and get shooting pains too but they do go.

Hi Vianne R - glad to hear your margins etc were clear and yes, everything you are experiencing is identical to my journey.  I had radiotherapy after my lumpectomy and am still experience pain and discomfort 6 weeks after radiotherapy.  My breast cancer nurse did say its something we can experience anything between 6 weeks up to 2 years, but please talk to someone if you are worried - there is nothing worse.

Tired minion is right, take the painkillers and rest as much as you can, look after yourself and we are all here for you if you need us xx

Thanks, I haven’t had radiotherapy yet and I’m worrying that the seroma is preventing me from healing properly or at least slowing it down so I’m released to hear that it’s normal to feel discomfort at this stage.

  • Perhaps the pain of the incision might go after a few days but I was told it can take many many months for breast tissue to settle after it has been disturbed. I would say mine was about 6 months or so before the swelling finally settled and the scar is still a bit hard even now, 9 months on.

My oncologist told me it was very common for omen to experience pain for a very long time. I still had swelling going into radiotherapy and it was fine, though I didn't have a seroma.

As for the blues, I have recently had a slump that I am just getting out of and I finished main treatment in April, so I think this is very common. I was doing really well and completely delighted to be finished treatment and enjoying life gain, the went through a low mood period. There is so much to take in
