I am 59yrs old and have HER 2 negative grade 3 breast cancer, I have 4 weekly chemo sessions left and saw the surgeon last week, was previously advised the nymph lodes in the arm pit need to be removed and will have a lumpectomy. Surgeon now advises as I have a non cancerous mass in my breast he has concerns and I may now need a mastectomy. He is to go back and have a discussion with the team and I am to see him again next week. We talked about reconstruction and he advised because I have to have radio therapy, the risk of problems with it will be high. He then talked about taking it from my stomach as it is natural rather than chemical. I advised if I do need to have mastectomy I would prefer to have it taken from the tummy. The surgeon then went on to advise what a serious operation it is and advised I would need to lose 2st 4lbs before he will do it. At my age that is a lot of weight to lose and will be slow to come off so could be waiting a very long time for the reconstruction to be done. I have to say I find it very unfair after going through what I have, that he is now putting conditions on it. Has anyone else experienced this or any advice they can give. Thank you

  • Plastics like your BMI to be under 30, as above the risk of complications is higher. That’s for medical reasons - the person who told me this was way way over that BMI so wasn’t judging me. Chemo and radio can trash implants so it’s best to grave them later if your going that route. The DIEP tummy tuck procedure is a massive operation - do look for our other discussions about it, with a large tummy wound and 10-12 hours of surgery with two surgeons, but can give amazing results. It’s very much an individual choice but not something you want to rush into. I’m daunted by needing to diet too!
