Just emerging from five days of aches after docetaxol....dreaming of a glass of chilled water that tastes normal, food that tastes even slightly pleasant, trip to the loo that doesn't involve cold sweats . I coped well with EC but this uggghhhh. Painkillers didn't make a difference. Warm baths, hot water bottle and extra quilt helped a bit. Still exhausted but must try to walk round the garden tomorrow . Also must start to eat well to build strength for the next two sessions. Anybody else going through the same?

  • Hi Cosmossy

I have been through those two and come out the other side ok. There are more pleasant ways to spend a few days. Got to be done though. I found the EC to be the worst time for me. We are all different. It might be worth telling your oncologist before the next dose. There is usually something that they can suggest to make things a little easier.

I found I could still taste lemon- so water with slices of lemon?? Also I could taste very spicy foods, they didnt taste normal but did taste ok. My daughter-in-law made me chili etc. which I did eat and enjoyed more than bland things.

It has got to be done, so roll with it and do what your body tells you.

    Sending big hugs to you.

  • Thanks....it's lovely to. hear from others going through the same. Hard to be positive when you feel grotty. Banana tastes ok!

  • I also had Docetaxol and had taste issues. A lot of food tasted awful and felt like I was chewing damp cotton wool! It did give me a voracious sweet tooth which I basically gave in to, on those days when most stuff tasted bad. Ginger biscuits, really sweet cake like brownies but also fruit yoghurts. To make up for it later, I ate a lot of fruit.

Also found that ketchup helped, something I’ve never really been a fan of. Scrambled egg with ketchup became a frequent meal.

Now 4 months post chemo and everything back to normal taste wise. Still have the sweet tooth unfortunately…

Epsom salts baths helped with the aches and chills, slept better too. Start slowly with a very small amount first in case of any sensitivity.

Wishing you all the best with the rest of your treatment xx

  • Please make sure you discuss these side effects with someone before your next dose. These side effects seem a little more severe than some people get. Also if your feet and hands develop a burning sensation contact someone immediately as this can sometimes be a reaction to taxotere which indicates the dose needs reducing next time around. Unfortunately, I didn't do that thinking this was normal and I should expect it. FEC had made me very sick so I just thought the side effects were inevitable. The result in my case was permanent nerve damage which would have been avoidable if I'd discussed it.

I hope you start to feel better soon. It isn't very pleasant but in a few weeks the chemo will be finished. In my case it has kept the cancer away since 2015.

    Take care.

  • Sorry to hear the side affects are so bad on docetaxal.  I am due to change to this after my 3rd cycle of EC, which as made me feel rough.  Was hoping it would get better when changed.  Doesn’t sound like it will.  I am having doubts about doing this whole chemo journey as I fear it has spread, last appointment to consultant showed larger than thought tumour so now having body CT on Saturday which has me scared witless.   Sorry to hijack your post , just been popping in to chats gathering info.  Your experience with your chemo has added to my thoughts so thanks .  I really hope you feel better soon , when is your next treatment? Xxx

  • Two weeks tomorrow..I'll certainly talk to my nurse I was warned about the pains but maybe something can be done to help.

  • Thanks.....I will talk to my nurse.

  • Hope that you have fewer side effects........we have to trust that it is effective.
