Spar day during treatment

Hi everyone

I pray and hope you all coping well

just a quick question… my daughter has booked a spar day for 2 for her 25th birthday and she wants to spend it with me

she is getting grief about me having a massage, they want a written authorisation from my oncologist… I ve told them I can have a soft massage but they are not having it.

has anyone experienced this?

I am really looking forward to being pampered as I ve not done anything fun since starting treatment as I ve been being nursing the chemo side effects and by the time I feel well it’s time to go back for more. The spar day is due 2days before my 4th DPT cycles and that few days is when I am my best… hence I didn’t think it would be a hassle

Any advice please?

  • Hi ShazT welcome to the forum. I think that you have encountered what many of us so when having treatment or having just recently finished treatment with beauty treatments. Many therapists are reluctant to offer therapies when on treatment as I dont think that their insurance covers them for that hence why you may be experiencing issues.

  • If you are actively going through chemo then I don't think you are supposed to have any beauty treatments. All your quick growing cells are very damaged and that includes your skin. You could get a very bad reaction from not only the massage itself but any oils they use too.

You also don't want to muck up your lymph system etc with massage while your body is trying to fight and recover from the damaging effects of chemo. I would imagine there would be quite a high risk of feeling very ill if the massage releases all the toxins quickly from your muscles.

Chemo is really harsh on your body, I'm not sure massage is a good idea even if they agreed to it.

Sorry to have to say that!

It doesn't just stop at chemo, people won't touch your back when you're going through radiotherapy and I think some people struggle getting anyone to touch their back or arm for a long time after surgery and other treatment.

  • My oncologist said I could as my side effects from chemo weren’t bad.  I had a massage with no bad effect but I strongly recommend you talking to your medical team

  • I agree that you should consult your team and be careful with what products the use but gentle massage has been shown to be beneficial to cancer patients so with the blessing of your team it should be fine x

  • Thankyou Granny59, Beattebeast, Dc6 & Anna12345.

    Every point taken

will call my oncology specialist nurse tomorrow and ask the question

this is a whole new life experience on it’s own, it’s reassuring that you guys are always available…I am not walking alone in this very rude unwanted  interruption of life. Thankyou once again
