My plan is for two lumpectomies, left and right in a few days, followed by radiotherapy, again both sides.
I would welcome any practical advice anyone can give so that I am as prepared as possible. I live alone and I am fit and healthy. I realize having operations on both sides at once probably complicated things a bit.
thank you for any tips re bras, lifting, stretching etc.
Hello Pengu1n, i first had a lumpectomy on my left breast, but cancer cells were then found, so i recently had a left breast mastectomy. My tips would be to get your home cleaned top to bottom, get all your washing done, wear tops and pj's which are buttoned, in case you struggle with popping tops over your head. Lean on friends and family for lifts, taking rubbish out, hoovering, shopping, company. Being on here is great as there's always someone to chat to. Buy pain medication, i use Ibuprofen and paracetamol. I also needed meds to make me poo, i struggled to go, if you don't go after a day or two, get something to help you go. You'll be given lots of pamphlets and an exercise chart, make sure you do the exercises as they have suggested. Be kind to yourself, take one day at a time. Wishing you well with your Operation and a speedy recovery, ohh wear a front fastening bra with no wires, make sure it's comfortable. xx
Sorry to hear your diagnosis
I would recommend soft crop top bras or front fastening bras. You will be given arm exercises by the physios in the hospital. Please do them religiously as they will make your life easier especially when it comes to radiotherapy.
Get some larger cotton T shirts to wear next to the skin so that the seams don’t rub under the arms where you will have your sentinel node removed.
I was told not to drive for two weeks or until I could do an emergency stop without pain .
They will ask you to have someone stay with you for the first 24 hours after your op.
Painwise it was ok for me. I wore a soft bra in bed to stop my boobs pulling.
I’d fill the freezer with tasty meals in advance for the days you don’t feel like cooking. My op was fine but I did have post anaesthetic brain fog for a few days afterwards.
Hooe this helps x
Thank you for taking the time to reply to me what you say is very useful. I have just overs week to get ready so will take your advice. Thanks again. x
