Hello my first day on here. I am 57 and triple negative . Lumpectomy booked for 2nd December I have breast implants, not sure what to go for bra wise? I had post surgery bras for my breast implants 8 years ago but not sure what to go for with a lumpectomy? Anyone else been in this boat? Chemo & radiotherapy on the cards for next year...

  • Hello,

I too had triple negative bc. Like you the tumours were removed by a lumpectomy and chemo and radiotherapy followed. It wasn't always pleasant but to date, it has been successful.  My lumpectomy was in November 2015 and my 6th annual mammogram is booked for mid December. I'm afraid I have no knowledge about implants and what effect they might have but I bought cotton, very soft, front opening bras with no wires. This meant that while the node surgery healed, I didn't need to reach backwards. I found catalogues like Bonprix stock front opening bras. I'm sure someone will have the information you need.

I hope your treatment goes well.

    Love Karen

  • Thank you very much, front fastening is a good idea!

  • I had a lumpectomy recently and found a supportive post operative bra comfortable. I had to wear it day and night for weeks. For my next op, mastectomy and implant, I’ve been told I’d need to wear it even longer. I have a Royce silver post surgery bra, which I bought from Nicola Jane online. It’s super stretchy so copes well with the swelling. Front fastening is helpful as you have to sleep in it and there’s no strap to dig in.

  • Hi Rose . Penelope here . I too am 57 and have had breast implants for cosmetic reasons . I still wear my front fastening post op bras day and night . I went to marks and Spencer’s for mine because I could try then  on in the store . I also bought 2 bras from Cancer research which are ok but the straps were not tight enough over my shoulder compared to the cup size I needed . Although I only have small implants I did find the pads inside the cup were a bit much so took them out in the end and now find the  bras more comfortable .

Regarding lumpectomy which I had to have on both breasts the wounds are healing nicely and my surgeon was very keen to keep the breast area as attractive as possible .

He actually went in on one side using the same incision used for my implants . The sentinel node wounds around my armpit are quite deep but I don’t feelI unsightly.

Has it been explained that radiotherapy my make your implants go hard ? I read that you had your implants 8 years ago and generally speaking as you probably are aware implants have a 10 year life span . It may well be worth investigating a plan B after your treatments are finished to replace ?

That is what I will be doing further on down the line . Either remove completely or replace . I’m going to wait and see where my mind is at.
It’s a long journey ahead for us all but the kindness and support you can access on this forum i for one find invaluable .

    Hugs, Penelope xxx

  • Hello Thank you so much for your reply. Its a lot to get my head round . I seem to be more concerned about my implants than the rest of it! Feeling thankful to have surgery, have to grin & bare the chemo, radiotherapy although a way off seems more daunting. My implants were pure vanity. What can I say? It’s given me much more body confidence. You have a good idea to wait & see. And replacement is an option. I’m off for a walk in the sunshine. Everything is in technicolour at the moment.  I’m feeling very positive (which hubbie says makes s nice change!)

  • I’ve found front fastening ones easiest. The one from Theya healthcare is very comfortable and is available as a zip or hook and eye. Not cheap but comfy
