Firstly I have been reading many of your posts since my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in August and have found them really helpful and supportive, thank you.
My wife has had a therapeutic mammoplasty operation and there was no evidence of cancer in the sentinel lymph nodes. However we have just had results back from the oncotype test and are unsure of our (ultimately my wife's) next decision. For our age group a score below 15 would mean chemotherapy would not be recommended and my wife's has come in at 16! We have an appointment with the oncologist next week to discuss the next steps. We know Radiation and hormone tablets are coming but wonder if chemo would still be recommended. Did anybody here have a similar result? I f so any advice would be really welcome. Thanks in advance!
Hi. Is your wife post or pre menopausal? I was told 25 and under no chemo for post menopausal and 18 and under for pre menopausal. I had decided if mine was 25 I would have chemo as on the cusp. However it was 11 so decision made. It’s not easy deciding as whilst u want to do all u can to get rid of this you don’t want to jeopardise your body with possible side effects. Has she had a predict score too?
HI Gwills, Thank you for taking the time to reply. My wife is pre menopause we are both 45. You hit the nail on the head as that is exactly how we both feel, we want to do what is best but the possible side effects are concerning. No we have not had a predict score either. Is that usually carried out by the Oncologist or do you think should we use the online tool?
Hi. You can enter your cancer details age etc online and get the result. I did however get given it by my breast surgeon before I saw my oncologist. 16 is still on the right side of good re her results. I had a 1.2% benefit from chemo at being alive at 10 years but was told if 4% or more you get chemo anyway. My percentage was already 90% before the chemo is added. Ask for it when you go again as it helps you together with the oncologist decide. I had an auxiliary node affected too but I’ve not had chemo.
