Hi all had a lumpectomy in July and had auxiliary clearance 3 1/2 weeks ago, developed a very large seroma in my armpit which I’ve now had drained 5 times, the last today which was done by a registrar who works with my surgeon. Anyway I noticed yesterday that the bottom of my breast has now developed an orange peel effect and when I look at it in the mirror I can visibly see the areas that have fluid in the tissue. Asked the registrar who said you’ve had your lymph nodes removed so the fluid has nowhere to drained, I felt like saying to him “ no s**t “, I hate the way they talk to you like you’re an idiot. Anyway had no help whatsoever and I’m really worried I’m developing lymphoedema of the breast, just wondered whether anyone else has developed this and what you did. My arm and armpit are fine no signs of any swelling, or could it be that my seroma is draining into my breast.
Thanks in advance
Diane xx
Hi I’ve had an MRI last month and that’s all ok, haven’t finished treatment yet, more worried that it’s lymphoedema of the breast to be honest, but I will ask the BCN and I’ve got an appointment with my surgeon in 2 weeks so I’ll ask her about it too.
Thanks for replying xx
Hi Di54, sorry you’re having this worry, sounds a lot like my lower breast post radiotherapy. At my follow up oncology appointment 10 weeks after rads finished, I was given antibiotics in case of infection and a referral to the lympheodema service (usually delivered at local clinics rather than hospitals, in my area anyway). The lympheodema nurse confirmed that I had mild lympheodema in the breast (arm and hand remain fine). Do ask for a referral as I found the nurse so helpful. And it was such a relief to know what was wrong. It’s a less well known side effect of rads and of course from lymph gland removal. It’s good you’ve had an MRI to rule out anything sinister but if it’s lympheodema you do want to know as there’s stuff you can do. I wouldn’t pre empt what the medics will say but hope you can get a referral. HFxx
