I'm seeing the surgeon tomorrow, after having a wide local incision on the 8th. Diagnosed with high grade dcis. Bcn, said it's very likely I'll need three weeks of radiotherapy. I believe it doesn't begin for at least six weeks after surgery. This will probably mean I'll finish on Christmas eve. I was wondering if they might suggest I wait until after Christmas. Or would that be too long of a gap?
Any advice would be really appreciated.
Thank you ladies.
In 2013 I had high grade DCIS and lumpectomy followed by RT, I think I waited at least 8 /10 weeks after surgery for my slots but of course it’s a long time ago now! It really does depend on how busy they are but a slight delay will make little difference from what you’ve reported, I hope that helps x
Hi Biddygirl,
All I can say is don’t go in to your appointment expecting to find all the answers. The surgeon refers you to the next stage of treatment and although they might give you an idea of timescale and how many sessions you will find out much more when you have talked to the radiologist.
I think 6 weeks is a minimum (I was told 10/12 weeks was more likely by the surgeon) and you will be able to talk to the radiologist and ask if it would be detrimental to you if you wanted to delay for any reason. I just started radiotherapy today… 14 weeks post lumpectomy. 2 weeks of the delay were because I needed an additional test to see if I needed chemo. My planning appointment was 3 weeks ago and I am having 5 sessions. I think a lot of places are probably running on longer waits than info suggests you should expect. It is really hard having to wait and not knowing how to plan ahead. In between getting worried and upset about the wait I just keep reminding myself that this is the most important thing to be doing for me whenever it happened and other things will just have to take second place.
Sorry that is a bit of a long reply but hope it helps!
Hi Pepple.
Don't apologise for the long chat. It's been very helpful and informative. I will go to my appointment later, with things clearer in my mind. Like you, I'm looking at things, this is for the best for me and whatever treatment I have and when, I will only benefit from it. Thanks again for your reply.
I wish you well going forward.
Sue. Xx
