Hello all.
I had my first NHS breast screening a couple of weeks ago then received a callback for further investigation. I tried not to worry and told myself this happens all the time and as my other half is finishing a massive project at work and under a lot of stress I went by myself.
As I was taken into the appointment the nurse asked me if there was anyone else with me and my stomach churned. I was shown the area of concern went through all the tests and was told by the doctor that in her opinion the object they found in my breast is a cancer.
That all happened on Friday and I have been in a state of shock ever since. This afternoon they are calling with the biopsy results, I’m so scared, all sorts of dark thoughts are going through my mind. I’ve just been on google trying to find out what sort of cancer it could be from the way it looked on the scans I know that’s not a good thing to do but it’s so hard not to spend all morning searching google for information. especially on my biggest fear; that this tumour could be secondary to another cancer.
I’m a proactive person and the waiting is not coming easy to me I so desperately want to get on with getting rid of this thing.
if anyone has any advice they can offer or any insight into what comes next, especially what to expect with waiting and what tests I might expect to have that would be so so helpful.
It would be so much better for me to hear from you than consulting doctor google!
thank you so much,
VR x
Please do NOT google, waiting is the hardest but until you know for definate if it is cancer and what sort of cancer you will only scare yourself. Please let us know your results and some amazing ladies on the same treatment plan will be able to give you support and advice. Fingers crossed for you Ann
I concur with farmerann - please don't google. if needs be browse the Macmillan site. I suspect what they may confirm is your type of cancer once they have had confirmation. Waiting is the hardest time but t does mean that they have the info they need in order to decide treatment plan. My suggestion would be try to distract yourself - books, tv, cleaning, tidy a cupboard - whatever keeps you going. Write any concerns down however daft you may think as it will get them out your head. Good luck x
You sound like I was a few weeks ago.
Don’t google. This is the best place to be for support etc. My breast care nurse categorically told me not to google.
The results will determine your treatment plan, so in my case it has been surgery (removal of the lump and my lymph nodes) and then the lab results from that will determine whether I need chemotherapy (unlikely) or radiation therapy (most likely).
I imagined the worst before I got the biopsy and scan results. I was convinced it was everywhere and cried with relief when I was told that it wasn’t. All the best.
Hi everyone
I had surgery 2 weeks ago so now just waiting for my results and then a treatment plan … it is hard the waiting but everyone has been amazing , I’m just taking each day at a time and thinking … thank goodness for mammograms! I went for my 1st routine check and went thru the biopsies etc , they found the cancer in my right breast .. having large breasts they did a lumpectomy and a reconstruction on each breast , I’m now a lot smaller , but thankful… I hope everyone is ok xxx
Hi there, how are you now? X
Hi,
Thank you so much for checking in. As expected the biopsy found cancer cells, I have an appointment booked in with a consultant so I will find out more then but the nurse was able to confirm that it is a primary breast cancer so at least my fears of it being a secondary tumour have gone away.
posting here and reading all the responses really helped me to calm down. Thank you everyone. The nurse told me not to google anything as well!
I have had a couple of hours sleep since the call (first proper sleep in days) and feel strangely calm at the moment.
thanks again everyone.

Hi VR.Your situation sounds very similar to mine and I am only just slightly ahead of you. I can only tell you of the experience I have had so far (and it’s not very long or detailed).I had a 3 year screening mammogram on 17.9.21 and was called back and had the first assessment appointment on 5.10.21. At that appointment I had more mammograms, ultrasound and biopsies (having been told that there was a very small area of microcalifications). I returned a week later on 12.10.21 to be told that I had invasive lobular carcinoma (the Dr I saw said the whole team were very surprised by the results, not all all what they expected). At the appointment I was told that my type of cancer doesn’t show up very well on a mammogram and therefore I would need to have an MRI before being seen by the surgeons. If I had not needed the MRI I would have been contacted by the surgical team within 48 hours. I phoned the MRI booking department this Monday to be told that my MEI would be in December! I said that I had been diagnosed with cancer and surely it should be quicker than December, but they told me that there was nothing on the referral to indicate that it was a 2 week wait. However, the breast screening unit has sorted that out and I phoned again (this morning) and have now been given an appointment for Friday for the MRI. This is my journey so far. What I would say is try not to Google too much (if at all). Like you, I looked at the internet to try and find what type of cancer I might have, but it didn’t help. Use the internet for education not diagnosis. If you do Google only use reputable sites (Macmillan, Cancer Research UK). I have been given such wonderful support and advice on this forum so use it as much as you need. The waiting is very difficult and you will have so many questions that cannot necessarily be answered immediately. If the hospital doesn’t get in touch with you within the time specified, get back to the breast screening unit and find out what is going on.If you have to make a nuisance of yourself do so. (if I hadn’t found out about the mistake on my MEI referral I would still be waiting). Wishing you the very best. Ros.
Hi Cistar,
Your message has been posted on the thread of the message I posted earlier today so people may not see it in the chat.
You might want to post it again in the main chat stream.
it’s wonderful to hear that you are doing so well.
VR
Thank you so much for sharing that Ros.
It’s such a shock isn’t it. I feel like the whole planet has become unstable beneath my feet.
I will definitely follow your advice.
Warm wishes,
VR
The same thing happened to me. If it’s been detected on routine screening and not palpable it’s likely to be small and contained.
I was diagnosed in May . I had surgery in June and Radiotherapy in August..
The waiting for results is the worst but once you have the plan you can get through this.
This forum is a great place for support and we are all rooting for you.Whatever you are going through someone will have been through it before and can help you
