I have had 3 months of torturous chemo treatment experiencing many of the side effects mentioned at the start of treatment. I ended up call the emergency oncology so many times I didn't have to say my name. So, they decided to skip the rest of my chemo & go straight to surgery. I had my operation on Wednesday and got side effects at the weekend when there's no help available other than 111. I developed swelling of the arm & numbness all of which can be a serious side effect of blue dye & lymph node removal. Had to wait until Monday to go back to hospital to be told that the swelling & numbness was due to the operation site and all to be expected & quite normal. We don't get sick Monday to Friday. What would be really helpful would be medical support available at the weekend, to be given a print out of possible side effects to be aware of after surgery.
Sorry you weren't told what to expect, that must have been really worrying when you felt you had nowhere to turn. I did get told all potential side effects by my BCN before surgery and had several leaflets to take away with me. That was for all treatment - chemo, surgery, radiotherapy, all the drugs they give you.
I also have the cancer care line to call 24/7 if I had any concerns, that wasn't just for chemo. NHS24 is very good too.
I live in Scotland so it maybe varies by area.
