Lobular and chemo?

Just wondering if any of you lovely ladies have had chemo for invasive lobular cancer and your experience /results with this as I have been advised this will be part of my treatment plan.

I have read so many times that lobular does not respond to chemo so I’m just wondering if this is the case , are they just trying something because I’m a hopeless case and it’s a last resort or is there any benefit to it ?

I have had a mastectomy and the tumour found to be 9.5cm ( huge I know ) don’t think I’ve read anything on here where anyone’s tumour was anywhere near this size. They also found some dcis in the same breast . Positive for Er and Pr .
2 lymph nodes taken, both contain cancer so awaiting full clearance to find out extent of node involvement.

also waiting for Ct scan to check for further spread. Bone scan was normal .

  • Hi I was also diagnosed with lobular cancer and have just had an auxiliary clearance 2 weeks ago as 2 nodes were positive mine was 21mm. I don’t know yet whether I’ll be having chemo but I expect I will because of the positive nodes, mine is grade 2.
The reason why you’ve read that lobular doesn’t respond to chemo is because lobular cancer is know to be a slow growing cancer, chemotherapy targets fast growing cells, that’s why it affects your hair because hair is fast growing,  but that doesn’t mean it won’t work, they wouldn’t be giving it to you if they thought that it wouldn’t work.

There are lots of ladies that I’ve read about on here that have had chemotherapy for lobular cancer so I’m hoping that’s the case, it does say that lobular cancer response very well to hormone blockers.

  • Also they are developing some “magic bullet” chemotherapy which is coded to attack only specific cancer cells - they work differently to standard chemo. My dads had such a treatment for his lymphoma- they compared the DNA of his cancer cells to his healthy cells and developed a drug personal to him. It’s amazing. He had very few side effects. So I understand they are using similar treatments on all sorts of cancers including breast

  • Hi Anabrock that is very interesting, my surgeon told me 2 weeks ago that she wants to discuss a trial with me when I have the results of my auxiliary clearance and I’ve read that they are doing more research into lobular cancer so will have to wait and see.

  • Hi

I had lobular breast cancer with 1 Lymph node out of 3 was cancerous. I had mastectomy on left breast with immediate reconstruction. I had chemo then followed by radiotherapy I am now nearly 20wks post chemo I had a 6cm tumour all cancer was removed with mastectomy the chemo and radiotherapy was to mop up any stray cells that were lurking around. Hope this helps

    take care

  • Thankyou Di54 Anabrock and diamond girl for your replies . The magic bullet sounds interesting, I hope it was successful.

I think my mind is probably working overtime at the moment and it does help to hear other people’s positive stories on here.

Hopfully the chemo will work it’s magic . Wishing you all the best and Thankyou for the support,
