Ugh my armpit driving me nuts

I had sentinel nodes removed a couple of weeks ago and everyone is pleased at how my scar is looking etc. But the skin of my armpits is so sensitive I can barely cope with the feel of my clothes, and have spent way too much time with my forearm on my head to ‘air’ it. It feels scalded, but of course there’s nothing to see - just nerves misfiring. I’m told it should improve but a. no guarantee and b, I need to have the other side operated on too in a few weeks. Am I going to have to live with both arms on my head? It’s like tinnitus of the armpit. Anyone able to give me some sign this will improve? Pessimism aside, it’s not even been 3 weeks yet.

  • Hi I had a similar issue but with a completely oversensitive nipple after surgery.  I couldn't bear the rubbing of any sort of bra or clothing and every time I twisted or leant forwards even slightly was painful.  It took quite a few months for things to begin to calm down.  We are all different and there are never any guarantees but 3 weeks is early so there is definitely time for things to settle.

It's took at least six months for my arm pit and the inside of my arm to begin to start feeling like they were going back to normal.  Now 9 months on it feels about 90% normal.

So don't give up hope it's earl days.

  • Hi I had it when I had sentinel node biopsy and it did eventually go, I had auxiliary clearance 2 weeks ago and it started again with the seroma I have developed only worse this time, my skin is to sore to touch. My BCN said to massage it with lotion to desensitise it, I did ask if I could use ibuprofen gel on it and she said yes (only on my arm though not my armpit) but I’ve found putting it on my arm also helps my armpit, it’s worth a try if you can use it if course.

  • Thanks I’ll give that a try
