Has anyone considered asking for a second preventative mastectomy to fend off recurrence of breast cancer ?

No I didn't do that but had cancer in both Breasts and had a bilateral mastectomy it was my choice as I found the whole episode of finding a lump and the worry too much to have to go through again . I know it may come back but less likely too after a bilateral mastectomy X

    Hope that helps

I was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer and after a year of treatment followed by 6 monthly checks I was discharged. About 3 months ago I felt a tenderness in my right breast and when I undressed I noticed a red area (about 1” diameter) to the side of my nipple and one of the spots surrounding the nipple was filled with a white fluid.  This disappeared following a shower and the red area gradually disappeared over the next few days. Dunno what to do. Waiting for doctor to respond.

Jayne, I think it was you I was talking to last week before my mastectomy and I don't know how to find that thread again. If you know how, please can you contact me? Frances

That's good if it started to calm down on it's own do you think it was an infection?  The trouble with us us we can't relax and not worry anymore we have been through too much . So we need a proper examination every time don't we ?

Hello Jayne :) how do I find you on here? This site confuses me. The operation went fine, thank you, but I am black and blue. And SO fatigued -- I had hoped a week on to feel a lot better than this. How long did it take you? Is it normal to have post-op blues after a week? And I am worried about the other breast and wanting to ask for that to go too so this discussion is interesting. I see the consultant on Wednesday and hope by then I will be less tired and emotional. I hope you are continuing to improve and are out of pain? x

    Hi Murdoch ,

    1. I'm so pleased you had your surgery . It's just a week you must keep taking the painkillers to keep on top of it I had codine first two weeks them ibuprofen and paracetamol for next month. I just started wearing a bra . Yes everytime the district nurse came I cried ! I was so pleased to see her. Why you worried about the other breast? Had physio this morning that helps a lot with pain relief . Just rest up as much as you can

Thank you so much, Jayne. Yes, I am taking analgesics every 4 hours which keeps the pain at a bearable level. I don't have a district nurse coming. Have asked the nurse at the Marsden to ring me and I am doing the exercise regime they gave me for shoulder and arm. I feel lop-sided and I feel as if the other breast is a time-bomb waiting to go off. I feel better when I can see a friend and get distraction but when resting i feel very low in spirits. I'm sure that will get better. I am thinking about you too. How do I find you on another occasion -- I only found you today because I recognised the name Rhiwbina in another thread. I am Murdoch because I work on Iris Murdoch's novels! Take care of yourself, Frances x

Hi Frances I will send you a friend request .

This is tricky and I do understand your worry about other breast. I had a large tumor in right breast that I didn't know about and a small one in left breast that I found. So I can well understand your worries. Did you ask them to remove other breast? As far as I'm aware you are untitled to treatment of on the other breast if it's affecting your emotional health and that treatment could be a maesectomy. So if you want one keep pushing. As far as you getting another cancer remember that you will now have very close  screening every year so will be caught early  if you are unlucky.  But most people don't get it in other breast. Can't believe you not seeing the District nurses?

Will have a go now at sending that request keep in touch
