Hi everyone, I had my wide excision and sentinel lymph node surgery 10 days ago, all seemed fine, with not too much pain, but the last couple of days I have experienced a burning pain under my arm, going down a few inches from my armpit towards my elbow. There is also a bit more of a swelling under the armpit incision, a bit of a seroma I guess. Has anyone else had the burning, stinging pain? Will it resolve itself? The actual breast incision seems relatively pain-free, except that I do need to still wear a bra at night, without it I get breast pain when I turn over in bed. Another 10 days before I get my histology results, seems a long wait. All the best,
Ginnylin
Welcome. I had a lot of tingley and pain back of arm. Its due to them having removed 3 out of 4 sentinel nodes. I'm nearly 4 months down the line from surgery and still get aches in back of arm. It takes ages for this to heal I was told. Nerves grow back at 2mm a month. I found I wore a bra day and night for at least 8 to 10 weeks. I have big boobs (34FF on a 5ft frame) and had a terrible pulling sensation when I slept on good side. I then tried to wean myself off bra prior to radiotherapy. I now sleep in an M&S sleep vest which keeps me in place.
From previous threads, I think it just depends on size of boobs, what surgery you've had done, advise from medical team and preference. If they've not recommended much then you can always ask your breast nurse but major factor is 'be comfy'. Good luck x
Hi Ginnylin, I had a terrible burning pain under my arm about 5-6 days after surgery, it made me feel miserable but I put a square of tshirt material between my bra and my skin and kept doing the exercises and after about 2 weeks it started to fade and I’d say by 4 weeks it was gone, because I don’t remember it still being there when I had my results at 5 weeks. I didn’t wear a bra at night despite being 34gg and as soon as I could wear my normal bras I did because they are very comfy and supportive.
I had no instructions from the BCN to wear a bra at night or in fact to wear a non underwired one.
Hope it feels better soon.
Diane xx
Thank you Diane, I am doing my exercises too, so hopefully this will fade like yours did. I do find it is not too bad first thing in the morning, just gets worse as the day goes on, probably because of activity. I am only a 36A bra size, it feels as thought the interior stitching is pulling if I don't wear my bra at night, I guess this will improve as the healing progresses and the stitches dissolve. Nice to hear you are doing ok, all the very best,
Jane
Hi Tired Minion, thanks for getting back to me, I guess it is still really early days for me still. I am small, 36A cup size, but it still feels like a bad pulling sensation when I try to turn onto my side at night, wearing a bra really helps as I guess it keeps everything in place so to speak. Just hoping my results come back ok and I don't have to have chemo, just radiotherapy. Are you on any hormone suppressants?
Take care,
Jane xx
Sometimes I don't think size matters as in all fairness you've had surgery and they have rummaged around and then internally stitched you up so a pulling sensation is normal. I still struggle to sleep on my side but get so bored lying on my back! They removed all my cancer with surgery. Struggling with side effects of radiotherapy as skin is broken and very red and hot. I'm on tamoxifen for the next 5 years. this is month 3. there's more info in my profile if you click my name to save me typing more! Good luck x
