Hi newbie here.
Just wondered if it’s worth me continuing with the cold cap. I’ve only had one chemo session so far, but despite using the cold caps my hair has started shedding after 17 days. I’m due for my second round of chemo soon and wonder if it’s worth continuing with the cold cap. Could it stop falling out, or now it’s started will it continue to fall out?

thanks for any advise

  • Daughters friend cold-capped as she is a professional musician, with shoulder length blond hair. She said it thinned quite a lot especially early on, but she persisted and although thinner, it still looked a reasonable head of hair.

I hope you’re doing all the things recommended with conditioner and so on?

    Best wishes

Ok thank you. What are the recommendations for conditioner I’ve not been given any info?

    thank you x

  • Hi Boogie13. I used the cold cap throughout and did shed a lot of hair after cycles 1 and 2 of EC chemo, after that it slowed down a lot. I probably lost about 50% overall but my scalp was covered without any bald patches. It then started growing back during cycles 5-8 of Docetaxol. Worth noting that it’s also grown very quickly since chemo finished..and very thick!

I think the reference to conditioner is making sure your hair is well damped down and covered with conditioner before you put the cold cap on. And then treating it very gently in between cycles - Washing only once or twice a week with a mild shampoo and a little bit of conditioner and brushing it carefully.

Personally I think it’s worth seeing how you go after your second cycle, maybe a third. Just note that the thinner your hair gets, the colder it is at the start.

    Good luck xx

Thanks so much, again very helpful. Good point about it getting colder!! Hadn’t thought about that.
    thank you x

  • Hi. I had very similar results to NBI above.

lost a lot around 2 weeks after first chemo and steadily lost some throughout the rest of my chemo. But persevered and ended up with it being a lot thinner all over at around 50-60 percent left.

Started growing back during later cycles of docetaxal chemo.  Never went totally bald so never wore the wig I bought at the start for just in case!

now growing in really thick, still short, is curly and straight! Haven’t got a clue what it is going to be like in the end, but so happy it is growing in!

previously had shoulder length straight hair that was my pride and joy...so hoping it will settle down soon. But just so glad I persevered because each cycle I nearly packed in.

good luck with your treatment whatever you decide!

  • I also shed throughout EC, but it started growing with Paclitaxel.  It meant I only wore a scarf to cover thr thinness,  with hair coming out.  About 2 months after finishing chemo I cut off the long hair which remained and had a perfectly decent short hairstyle with curls for extra volume (i normally have straight hair and it started growing straight a few months later). If you are having docetaxel it will protect your roots,  a some women find their hair is thinner or patchy after that one.

  • Hi Boogie13. I gave up after 2 my hair was coming out in droves so I chopped it off.  I don’t have any hair left but only 2 more weeks of chemo.  Hope it grows back.  All the best xx

    Hi jgau

Thank you for your reply, think I’m gonna lose it all too, it’s very thin now. Had second cycle yesterday and chemo nurse said that there was a 30% chance of it not falling out with my treatment. So think I will be shaving  off rest if it not gone by the weekend. The tickly hairs are driving me mad!

im having 6 cycles 3 weeks apart so at least I can wear a nice woolly hat over the winter Laughing.

good luck with your treatment x
