I had a therapeutic mammoplasty on Wednesday, just on my left breast. My pain where there is actual surgery is barely noticeable. However, I have excruciating what feels like red hot pins and needles all down the back of my arm. I am presuming that this is ‘nerve’ pain ? Has anyone else experienced this ? If so, was it just post surgery or could it be ‘nerve damage’ ?

  • Hello again  sorry no one has responded to you yet, it can get a bit quieter on here over the weekend.  Once I respond it will bump you up to the top of the list and maybe some more of the lovely ladies on here will also reply to you.

During surgery the nerves are cut or injured and so what you are experiencing is not unusual.  Your doctors should be able to give you pain killers to manage the pain and they may also refer you to a physiotherapist.  You should have been given exercise to do after surgery and it is very important to do those as you were directed to otherwise the pain can get worse and your range of motion might get affected although it seems that this can be reversed.

There is some useful information, click HERE, on the macmillan website on pain after surgery.

Do call your doctor tomorrow and see about getting some pain medication, you shouldn't have to put up with such pain.

Wishing you a speedy recovery x

  • Did theyremove some nodes at the same time as that can cause pain in the arm, aspecially if they took more than a couple and need to move things around a bit to find them!

    Yes, they took sentinel nodes.

I have been to the hospital this morning and had my drain removed and chatted with the breast cancer nurse. She was quite reassuring that it is ‘normal’ to have this kind of pain

    thanks for your reply x

    Thank you x

drain removed this morning and breast cancer nurse was very reassuring regarding the nerve pain  X

  • it's such a relief to have the drains removed, I found them so irritating.  I had one on each boob so to make it easier to get around I put a back pack on my back and put them in there.

Made it so much easier to go to the loo and to walk around and go to appointments.

Good news that you were reassured about the nerve pain.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

    Thank you

i was given a hand made cotton bag that went over your shoulder to hold the drain.
provided by a local to me charity called friends of families- dollybirds. It made such a difference - a small thing, but a huge gesture.
I am totally overwhelmed with the support available  when going through this difficult time.
