Hi, l went today for what I thought was radiotherapy planning meeting and the oncologist told me that radiotherapy and hormone treatment might not be best for me as the cancer removed was not conclusive for positive receptors for hormones. So shocked so that not might be exactly correct. Was then told chemo might be the route to take. It was stage two and sentinel lymph nodes were clear. If l understood correctly, there was a tiny leak from the tumour. The bottom line is l have to decide whether to go ahead and do chemo, when it might not give me any benefits, do radiotherapy and tablets, or pay for oncotype DX test in Switzerland as it is not available here in Malta. I believe the test will tell me if chemo is suitable for the type of cancer l have. I don't mind the cost but am worried about the delay in starting any treatment. I was operated on August 18th. At my check up the surgeon told me to celebrate as results were good so l am in total shock. Today l was given details about chemo and the word oncotype DX on a piece of paper to do my research. Have an appointment next Tuesday to give reply. Phoned hospital two hours later to give response but they told me to wait until next week. Am devastated. Any advice please????

  • Hi

My friend had what she believed was ER+ breast  cancer , oncotype sent off and it came back as her being triple negative - the test only gives scores for ER+ so if you aren’t ER+ you will be wasting your money , and also potentially delaying your treatment. Both triple negative and HER2+ invariably involve chemo in their treatment . As shocking as it may seem , it looks like chemo is the way forward , have they suggested the-testing your sample and getting a definitive answer as to what type of breast cancer you have ?

  • Hi Juzeus

It is the job of the oncologist to give you the best advice, based on the facts of your condition. We are all different.

My instinct would be do do what the oncologist recommends, if I was able to. How quickly could you get the oncotype DX result from Switzerland? What were you going to tell the hospital that you had decided?

    Wishing you all the best

Thank you for your reply. I feel confused about everything tbh as l went with a list of questions about radiotherapy. I will check again about these er her types. The lab report before surgery said er positive, and Her2 positive but to do a fish test. It's the fish test that was inconclusive l think. I will have to ask. Thank you xx

Thank you for your reply. I asked him what he recommended and he said he cannot tell me, which l thought strange. He said to do my research and decide. I was going to ask for the test. He said approx two weeks wait....

I was operated on 2 August and got first  oncologist appointment tomorrow for Oncotype results. Surgeon also told me results were good but I'm not convinced really . As if tomorrow I need chemotherapy and or radiation I can't see how that is good news. I'm in a bit of a dark place at the moment everytime I go to the hospital it seems to be something else needs looking into X best wishes I agree with jowoomot take advice and check if Oncotype will benefit you before you pay X

Hi Jayne  thanks for your reply it's a grim time isn't it? I feel just like you- l am taking one step forward, two back. I managed to find out my fish result- it is Her2 negative, although the lab report before was positive, so that's the problem. So l think it helps in the decision to do the test. though tbh, l have no idea what l am doing and l feel totally out of my depth with all the terminology. This site is a godsend. Funnily enough, the info the oncologist gave me here in Malta on chemo is from this site, including the number of the helpline, which is bizarre! Wishing you lots of luck for tomorrow, big hugs, Julie xx

    Hi Julie ,

Thanks for you reply it is a grim time not convinced im going to be ok but that's because I'm in a dark place even my breast nurse said I was depressed. Do you ever wonder if all results are correct all of the time? I'm going to Velindre tomorrow and it's a lovely hospital with great staff . I just feel that good news will not be coming my way it might be my brains way of protecting me as if I think the worst then it can't hurt me whatever they say. I'm going on my own tomorrow as everyone is working but I'm ok on my own just can't believe that all this is happening to me. I keep thinking about the side effects of all these drugs they give us. What damage are they doing? I had a bilateral mastectomy and I never for one moment thought my arms would be so affected with cording .  My scars are horrific and I have a painful Seroma it's bloody neverending. I'm out of my depth too thinking about you so glad to have people like you in my corner sending me kind words and thoughts X

Good morning, bet like me you haven't slept all night. Good luck for today. You have certainly been through a lot already. You definitely think like me- l am a real overthinker and plan for every eventuality. That's why I was so gobsmacked yesterday as l was expecting radiotherapy planning. I had my list of questions in my bag!!! Will be thinking of you for today and hoping for good results. Xx

  • Hi juzeus, hope my message finds you well . Have you decided if you wanted chemo? And how come they did the fish test on you? We’re they not sure whether it’s her2 positive before
