I was diagnosed with breast cancer five weeks ago.
I have been told that it is a rare form and aggressive. My initial results didn’t make the MDT in time for the ‘Friday’ meeting. When they did make the meeting, it was determined to be a small cell cancer not normally found in the breast. So I was told that I possibly had a tumour somewhere else. This meant full body bone scan and full body CT scan. Nothing was found, so although rare it was determined that it was indeed a ‘primary’ tumour.
All of this has taken time and now I have been booked in to have a lumpectomy in two weeks 30th September.
May problem is that while I am waiting the initial lump is getting bigger and bigger !
I mentioned this to the surgeon only yesterday as I signed the consent form form surgery. He seemed unfazed.
But, tonight I really feel that it has doubled in size in only a couple of weeks and that it now still has two more weeks to ‘grow’ !
I am becoming terrified that it is growing and possibly spreading as I am waiting !
I don’t know what to do !!
Hi , I am so sorry you find yourself here and are going through this.
Let me start by saying that there are ladies who have had very large tumours removed successfully without spread anywhere else so try not to panic too much although I do completely understand why you are.
If your surgeon wasn't phased by it then it's very likely because there is no need to be concerned.
I waited a month between diagnosis and surgery so I understand how tough the waiting is. Waiting for tests, results and treatment to start is the toughest part, it is excruciatingly stressful. Keep reaching out and chatting with people on here, that's what got me through it.
take it one day at a time and surgery day will soon arrive.
Sending hugs x
Hi Nanaroo I’m waiting for lumpectomy like you but I see that as a good sign as think it’s not too big to deal with even though like you I can tell mine has grown too (do try and check mainly with arm up as it then seems smaller)! I told my bcn who said it won’t have grown that much. Mine was measured at 14mm (grade 3) but I’d say getting near 18mm now possibly bigger and has changed from a smooth lump to an irregular shape. Have my lumpectomy on 24th which can’t come soon enough now as I’m so bad with the waiting. I asked my doctor if anything would change during the wait ie spread to lymph nodes and they said no so I have to try and hang on to that. Hope this helps you.
Have you spoken to your breast care nurses about your fears as they may be able to put your mind at rest?
Thank you so very much for your reply. I’m sorry that I am only just seeing it. Things moved very quickly. My operation was brought forward and I had the tumour removed on the 22nd…. Phew !
obviously, now begins the waiting on the histology and what will come next. But, it is an ‘easier’ wait now knowing that it is no longer potentially growing inside me.
I have had the tumour removed and a reduction and uplift which was the recommendation of my consultant
Hello Nana
That is great that your surgery is now over with. I hope that you are feeling comfortable and have started with your exercises. I found that they were a great help. Take care! I hope that you get your results soon and that they show that they got good clear margins. Did you have any nodes removed?
Wishing you all the best
WallyDug
Thanks for your reply. Sentinel nodes removed, so everything now is what the histology report gives us.
It’s not really straightforward as small cell cancer in the breast doesn’t have a known plan of action regarding chemo/radiotherapy drugs. I will see the consultant on Monday 5 days post op. most probably have the drain removed and wounds checked over. They have told me 10-14 days for histology results. It’s fingers crossed for clear margins and a plan of action.
No need to apologise , so happy for you that things moved quickly and it's out sooner than you thought. It is a big relief once that happens and as you say waiting for the next bit is a little less stressful. Praying you get clear margins and a good histology report.
Keep in touch and let us know how you get on.
