How long are seromas after mastectomy likely to last? Mine have been drained twice, but it is now suggested they should be left to reabsorb. The area feels tight and uncomfortable. It is ten weeks since my operation. I had radiotherapy, and I am using lots of moisturiser,
Hi Loftus, I didn't have a mastectomy but I did have a seroma that was drained once but immediately came back within a few hours and felt much bigger. I could have had it drained again but the ultrasound doctor suggested to leave it to reabsorb as each time a needle is inserted to drain it there is a possibility of infection.
I probably stopped feeling it there after 4-6 weeks (memory a bit fuzzy over that whole period thankfully) although at my 6 month post lumpectomy checks it was still there. Decision was still made to leave it as no signs of infection and it wasn't bothering me, couldn't feel it there.
So if like me you decide to leave it alone to reabsorb to look out for any signs of infection in that area just because it's stagnant liquid there will always be a risk. Look for redness, heat tenderness etc and let your doctor know immediately if you have any concerns.
Hope it reabsorbs soon or that it at least stops bothering you x
Hello Loftus. I'm just off on another 2 hours round trip to hospital to get an infected seroma looked at again it was drained of white stuff 48 hours ago and I'm on day 3 of penicillin. Do keep an eye on it ....I had a fever for 3 days and was in a lot of pain.
