I have 4 more chemos before starting radiotherapy.  I was shocked when a toenail came off at when weekend - gross - anyone else experiencing this?  I’m sure oncologists just wait and see how we go!  I guess we all react differently and they can’t predict.  I now have a cough, cold picked up from my grand daughter.  Yeah only a cough/cold but feels so much worse.  I have another dodgy looking toe nail - … yuck.   With me the chemo seems to have gotten worse, in terms of symptoms - I suppose it’s cumulative!

Unfortunately it happens to mist of us, but BCN usually warn you about it. I would suggest wearing a light sock especially in bed so it doesn't get caught. Once it come off, use lots of gentle moisturiser.

  • Thank you Bustysusy - I never knew to expect this … ah well another symptom to add to the list!

  • Hi Jgau, I lost all of my fingernails too and am still in the process of losing my toenails (chemo ended in October).

My first cold after chemo lasted four months.

I currently have a cough which I've read on another post is a side effect of Letrozole.

I've also read that some side effects of all of the treatment I've had can be late starters so I've learnt not to think I've gotten away with anything.

  • Interesting, I thought I had got away with no issue with my nails (chemo finished in June) but I see now that this can continue and a few of my finger nails feel looseDisappointed relieved

  • I have a cough and cold right now. Feel a bit flu I hope I’m well enough for chemo on Friday

  • My toe nails fell of 5 months to the day since my last chemo , no pain, no idea they were going to do it x  they have never been the same since x

  • I never knew to expect this!  It was a shock when my nail came off.  I’m waiting for oncology to call me as I have a temperature!

  • Hi - my fingernails all became infected and lifted towards the end /at the end of my chemo , I needed a long course of antibiotics for them , it was totally gross- so just watch out in case your finger ends and nails get sore , that’s when I first noticed mine - the gift that keeps giving eh? Xx

  •  Hi my toenails on big toes became raised and infected didn't completely lose them .still not right two year after .Just to let you know I asked for gp surgery to refer me to podiatrist on NHS so no charge .

    good luck

  • If you haven't started chemo yet or are on an early cycle....you can protect your nails. A beautician came to my first session and told me to begin protecting my nails from Day 1 and also start using mouth wash. The product was evo nail which may no longer be available but it was a clear, nail protector. I was told to use it every day for six days, remove with acetone free remover on 7th, oil nails with argan or almond oil and restart the evo nail following day. For the mouth wash, also twice daily from Day 1.

I can't tell you if it was coincidence but I never had a nail or mouth problem. The mouthwash, alcohol free, was on prescription and recommended to increase usage if mouth felt sensitive. I did my toe nails too.....nails not quite every day as chemo made me very sick and I had days I could hardly move without vomiting but every day I could manage it, I did. It's because I reacted badly to both FEC and T that I think the nail care and mouthwash probably helped.

If you have finished chemo ....or nearly....I fear it is too late but hopefully beginners are reading the posts and can take a bit of 'me' time in an attempt to prevent the problems . Both losing nails and mouth ulcers are very painful.
