Is anyone else not celebrating the first day or school? My two twelve year olds return today, all covid measures removed for the first time since I started treatment in August 2020. I am thrilled for them, but today is post op chemo (kadcyla) session number ten of fourteen and we are having the latest debate on how we manage Covid.
I would be grateful to understand how other parents /carers are managing/balancing the risks while enabling the small ones to enjoy school.
Sending strength to all. x
Hi I'm not in your sitation as my children are grown up and i have yet to starr treatment but i did used to work in a secondary school.
Does your childs school have a parent support worker on site or something similar ?
I'm sure if you explained your situation they may be able to allay any fears you're having in regards to how school manage covid precautions and what steps they have in place if there were any cases.
Hopefully someone woth children at school will reply and offer more advice.
Could your children wear a mask and continue distancing and hand gel etc.? I'm at a school and about 15% of students and staff are still wearing masks. My daughter was so careful, not meeting friends, not going out, changing clothes in thr hall when she got home, but her teacher didn't wear a mask, came to school sick and boom! We all ended up with covid. Have you been vaccinated, because that would minimise symptoms and reduce the risk of long covid if you were unlucky.
Yes my 12 year old is back and it’s worrying being mid chemo so I understand! Can’t get hold of a vaccine for her either but I’m concerned about other bugs too, plus it’s a shock to the system trying to fit the treatment and side effects in with school again!! May the force be with us!! All we’re doing is avoiding PTA events, no play dates here at home and only play dates with people we know who are careful and haven’t just been on holiday x
Thank you, we have emailed the school about are circumstances. Last year they were amazing, but the measures in place meant they just felt like all the other children. They had a good day yesterday, both had masks in their pockets, one chose to wear it all day as he had to sit next to lots of people he didn't know, the other felt comfortable in his little friendship circle. Let's see how it goes!!!!!
Thank you, yes I had both doses between by pre op chemo and my post op chemo so hopefully have some protection, but feels a bit like who knows! The only thing we can really do is keep testing, I was isolated for lond periods during the earlier stages of my treatment plan and can't face that again!
It's difficult isn't it, as if the cancer diagnosis and treatment isn't bad enough! Our oldest son is 19 and had to continue going to college during the summer to complete his apprenticeship. He is in the routine of testing every morning and the smaller boys are now joining him with that, along with a shower and change when they get home . We are working on the theory that me isolating=complete breakdown, so we will just catch it as early as we can. Not sure working for the NHS helps! - too much information. Hope your 12 year old is enjoying school, take care and please do not hesitate to get in touch if you need a chat , those of us in the same boat need to keep paddling together. x
She was on yesterday but she’s not delighted to be back I agree when they were all wearing masks and bubbles were in place she was much happier and felt like the other kids, now it feels a bit Wild West in there. I’ve been on to the gp again today to try and get her vaccinated as I think that will really help. I’m a single parent so that makes it all’s bit tricky too, she sees her dad regularly and he’s supportive but she’s still reeling from he leaving and setting up home with someone else and then all this happened, it’s just overwhelming for her really bless her, hope yours are coping ok too, I’m sure she’ll be ok once she’s back a few days x
So we're nearly 2 weeks in, I hope you and your daughter are well. Fingers crossed that your treatment plan is still on track. Chemo session 11 done over here and no covid in the house yet! No vaccinexs for the children either though and having the same fun and games as last year trying to get my flu jab on the right date to fit in with chemo. Roll on half termx
Hello! Well! Mine has cried not to go 3 times since we went back honestly some nights I’ve had 3/4 hours sleep, banging headache etc and don’t know where I’ve found the patience!! It’s damn hard managing the chemo side effects and being up early for school, etc I have to say, finding that tough.I haven’t been able to get mine vaccinated despite considerable effort and then yesterday got an email from the school saying they’ll do covid and flu same time on 27th so! Can’t get a flu vaccine for myself as yet as they’ve not been delivered. I’m up farting for England since 4.30
But going to try and get more sleep now as my daughter is with her father for the weekend, fingers crossed! Good to hear your surviving too x
