What to wear?

I’m having a mastectomy Tuesday and it may sound a silly question but I’m wondering what to wear bra wise to come home. Does the scar interfere with the bra line? Or do we just go bra-commando?

Im also incredibly worried that I might get cancelled on the day. I’d been told that I’ll be 1st or second by the surgeon, but her secretary has said I’ve been bumped to 4th. If they take longer than expected, as happened with my previous lumpectomy, when I was 3rd on the list and I didn’t get back to the ward till 5pm, then there might be a chance I won’t get surgery at all. So, so stressed about it.

Funny how I started off asking one question, then my underlying fear just popped up there!

  • i think it depends on surgeons. I had my mastectomy last Friday and my surgeon suggested I didn’t wear a bra all week. I had a little vacuum in to seal wound. I saw him again on Friday past and again he advised me not to wear bra for about 4 weeks which tbh I don’t mind cos I think it would sit just where my wound is! I have bought denim dungarees to try and disguise my braless state and thankfully my good boob is not that big!!! I have about 5 weeks until I get measured for bra and prosthesis so will probably wait until then! Hope this was of some help! Thinking about you going for surgery x

  • Hi

Hospitals are all different (which really helps!!), I wore a mx bra with softy straight after, the pressure reduces the risk of lymphoedema.  It did get a bit messy with leaks though (nice).  My mx scar was pretty much in the middle of the bra cup and with all the drugs didn’t feel any pain re op or wearing bra just discomfort at times. I had a lumpectomy the other side at the same time and that didn’t even register discomfort wise for me…I do have a high pain threshold! And was possibly dwarfed by the mx the other side?  We are all different though….

I do hope you get your op as promised, mine was delayed once and I know how annoying it is.
