Hi I’m about to get my final results tomorrow after having had an MRI. I really want a mastectomy as I feel it’s better to get rid of all the cancer in 1 go rather than muck about. I’m 68 so don’t feel a need for a breast or an implant as I lost my husband over 3 years ago. Has anyone else chosen to do the same.

  • Hi Barb 1953…..sorry you find yourself here, but lots of info and support should you need it. I think it depends of the type of bc diagnosed as to whether mastectomy or lumpectomy may be needed,….I was given choice ( I know that’s not always the case )….but that was because I’d already had a mastectomy 26 years ago, I figured it would be easier to be totally flat! That surgery was 7 weeks ago, now waiting to see oncologist to see what  next, hormone meds or chemo and then hormone meds.

Good luck with your appointment tomorrow, maybe you will be given more info regarding choices then fingers crossed x

  • My mum was exactly the same as you , 69 and had lost my dad 5 years earlier - she had a mastectomy and no need for radiotherapy , just hormone tablets and has a prosthetic , she’s now almost 84 and did say she may have had a reconstruction if she had realised she would be so well and live so long Grinning (she is fab for her age) but I’m not sure she would have really.
If they think they can do a lumpectomy though you may have to fight to have a mastectomy, so ensure you’ve got all your reasons in place (they are more reluctant to do mastectomies than they were a few years ago)

    Best wishes

    Jo x
