Hi folks. 3 cycles of EC just done last one today and looking forward to 12 weeks of carbo and taxol.. for my stage 3 TNBC. My chemo nurse run me through the drugs and one if them is going to be ranatadine? I thought it was banned in UK. Can shed any light on it for me?
Yup you can’t get it at all. I used to take it regularly, prescription for non cancer related issue, it is now replaced with omeprazole which I now take for chemo side effects! I have no idea how they would get it, it even says on the nhs website it’s globally banned, very odd,
HI Anna. Thanks for your reply. I am lucky to be having my Chemo via BUPA and have been told they have it and are going to give it to me. It may be the difference between private and NHS as they have also given me some anti sickness or appetite stuff, I can't remember because there are so many drugs that I was told they don't give you on NHS because it's too expensive! Which is pretty disgusting really. My worry is that I though ranatadine was banned because it was dangerous? Any thoughts?
Er no, it’s because it’s potentially carcinogenic as I understand it. It’s subject to a global ban I thought atm.

I hope those help xx
I had several chemo anti nausea drugs on the NHS including one for day 1-3 only costing £49 for three capsules.
My father took Zantac for years and developed esophageal cancer, which is caused by a compound in it called NDMA (not MDMA!), which also causes prostate cancer and can cause liver damage. I'd be careful with it, though if it's only for a few days I'm sure that it's fine.
I was given a different tablet before surgery and chemo for reflux, but I can't remember which one!
I used to regularly take ranitidine with naproxen as I found naproxen makes my tummy sore and the ranitidine protects it. It is banned now, but as others have said, omeprazole is the usual replacement. Omeprazole significantly affects my mood so they now give me famotidine, which is very similar to ranitidine but hopefully safe!
